On December 6, 1989, a man in his mid-twenties entered L'Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal. He took with him a rifle. Blaming feminists for ruining his life, he shot and killed fourteen young women whose only crime was to seek higher education. Sadly enough, it may also serve as a reminder to us that there are places in the world yet today in which the repression and murder of women is sanctioned and carried out by people acting as agents of the state. And that, everywhere in the world, there exist forms of repression not as jarring to the sensibilities, but just as destructive and just as real, as these murders. Perhaps we could each do something, each day in our own lives, that would appropriately honor the memory of these women...
