The Stepsister Scheme by Jim C. HinesI have, as a general rule, been avoiding Jim Hines' work. His previous series, about goblins, looked like it was trying to go for humorous by way of twee, if you get what I mean. A second problem is this kind of "revisionist fairytale" thing. Done wrong, it's really annoying, and it's usually done wrong. ( Read more... )

Thanks for the reviews; I've added a few of these to my to-read list. I've got a question about Stross' "Atrocity Archives". I read his "Halting State", which I thought was pretty good -- except that it was written in second person. I found that fairly distracting and I wasn't sure if I'd want to read anything else by him if that's how he always wrote. Was AA this way, or was it, as the universe intends, in 1st or 3rd person?

AA is NOT in second person, thank all that's holy. I loved the story of Halting State, but the perspective made me scream.

I'm really glad to hear that. I loved and hated Halting State. AA sounded interesting, but I wasn't too sure I wanted to subject myself to 2p again.

If you enjoyed The Stepsister Scheme, I highly recommend The Mermaid's Madness. I bought it and read it on the day it was released. It's a hell of a lot darker, though.

You've just made me move Territory up on the TBR mountain. Yay!

I thought the goblin novels of Hines were fun, but not keepers.

I'm enjoying the del Franco series, and adore the Kitty werewolf novels.

I did enjoy the Stross Laundry noivels, though I'm ambiguous about him in general; the misogyny- usually a deal-breaker for me- was in tune enough with the james Bond thing that I was willing to overlook it here.

I am ADORING "Beyond Heaving Bosoms"!

I thought you summed it up much better than I did.
