I adore Russell, both his lighter stuff and the more serious essays.

I also have a ridiculous soft spot for Greeley, though I haven't picked up a book of his in about four years. It was just getting a bit too repetitious, so I stopped and haven't started reading him again.

Well, yes, repetitious indeed, but I find his stuff fits into the "comfort reading" box. Also, every now and then he throws in something new. For a God Game or the Cardinal Virtues or Contract With An Angel I'm willing to take a chance. :)

My real issue with "Covenants"- which i just finished- is that Freeman isn't very good at characterization. I'm not a writer, so cannot really detail what's missing... but everyone seems to be a cipher to me.

That being said, the chess game of the intrigues was really compelling, and seems to be in "The King's Own" as well (I'm about 1/3 through it). The world-building was intriguing. I do think that Rabbit acquired all too many Important Connections in the first book; going from nonentity to The Most Important Person In The World strikes me as pretty silly- but given that, Freeman handled it pretty well, I think.

I didn't have that problem. It all seemed fine to me.
