She’d rather be facing the barrel of a gun or ship twice the size of Serenity with weapons that would leave them little more than vapor, but she ain’t and she needs to focus. She don’t got much to work with here, out on the edge of the black with at least a day before the Captain came back to pick them up.

Zoe approaches with caution, her hand hovering near her gun, just in case. “Don’t know what this is about boys, but we don’t want no trouble.” She scans the group of them, five on horseback, another four on foot, and a line of vehicles behind them.

“Won’t be no trouble you give us what we come for.”

She looks the speaker in the eye. He's trouble, she can tell. Not a man here wouldn’t follow through on the threat made in the letter that had come that very morning.

“I’m afraid I can’t do that.” Zoe says.

“Would think it’s a simple trade. You give us the whore, we pay you, you and your friends can leave.”

“Ain’t no whores here.” Zoe answers, lifting her chin. “Just some folk come to pay our respects to them that died here.”

“She may not be a whore now, but she will be when we get done with her,” one of the men says, spitting on the ground at her feet.

“You don’t give us the girl, we take you all, kill you and the other one once we’re done with you, and we keep the girl.”

“I can promise it won’t be that easy.” Zoe is already backing toward her cover, the gun in her hand now. She only has to hold them off until Mal can get back for them.

“You got 'til sundown!”

She is cursing under her breath, looking at Kaylee who is wide eyed as she pushes the door closed. "Chùsheng xai-jiao de xiang huo. I can see what your brother saw in the place."

“It weren’t like this when I was here before.” Kaylee says. “My brother never said it went this ugly.”

“First clue might have been the part where he died unexpectedly.” River quips, coming out of the back of the house. “Found these.” She holds up two big guns.

Zoe might call her on the coarseness of her words, but she ain’t wrong, and seeing as it’s River the men outside are wanting to make their personal play thing, she figures she’s allowed to be a little harsh.

“Not enough to fight off that many.” Zoe murmurs as she looks at what they got to defend themselves with.

“Cap’n will come for us.” Kaylee looks to Zoe. “Right?”

“Oh, I’m sure he’ll come.” Zoe answers. “Not sure there’ll be us to come for when he does.”

“At least they aren’t Reavers.” River says.

“Might as well be.” Zoe counters. “Want the same things. Well, ‘cept the eating part.” Which wasn't much in the grand scheme of things.

"You could send me out there." River says quietly. She looks up at Zoe, a slow smile creeping over her face. "I play along, go quiet…until the time is right."

And Zoe knows the girl is much better than she used to be, but she still ain't right in the head if she thinks that sending herself out to be raped by a gang of men is a good thing, even with the fighting skills she's got…and maybe they don't got a lot of options, but that ain't one she's taking.

"You'll stay right here. Not about to tell the Doc I got his sister kidnapped and raped by a bunch of horny men looking to breed."

"No point in all of us dying." River argues, checking the load of the gun. "And they'll never see it coming."

Before Zoe can stop her, River is out the door and Zoe can hear her say, "I've got a proposal for you boys," before all hell breaks loose.
