Title: Fighting Dirty
Characters: Dana and Sam/Dean
Rating: R (Sam/Dean but completely non-explicit)
Words: 2000ish
Disclaimer: CW & Kripke & McG own all....I am just playing a bit.

Would love comments.

Written by my friend M.

Summary - Dana is a great kid but fights dirty (in more ways than one). Not really angsty but does deal with Wincest and a kid's understanding of it. So consider yourself warned.

Note #1 - The funny thing here - I have been known *koff* to complain (a lot) about kids of Sam and/or Dean in fan fic.... And this fic not only has a kid - it is written from the kid's POV. So, either I have lost my mind (quite likely) or I am relenting in the anti-kid stance (maybe).
Note #2 - You don't have to be familiar with Keeper verse to read this. I do warn that the Sam characterization may seem odd if you don't know Keeper.
Note #3 - One of these days, I am actually going to finish writing the fic in my original verse and stop butting my head into other people's...but today is not that day.

She loves this. Really, it's the bestest.

She gets to ride to and from school, but not in a car like normal kids. No, most days Dana gets to school via an Uncle Sammy piggyback ride.

Dana places her face on Sam's shoulder.

I love you Dana thinks.

Love you too Sam smiles as he sends the thought back at her.

In Dana's fourth grade GATE class, the kids learn an advanced word each week. Last week, the word was indulgent. Dana laughed because indulgent fits Uncle Sammy to a tee. Dana only has to wish for the pretty barrette or the pink tights or a music player or a Barbie motor home or a wand or boots or whatever. And Uncle Sammy has it for her within a few days.

She really isn't sure where he gets the money. Sam has a job but Dana knows that he doesn't make a lot. But, she gets everything her heart desires. Some of the stuff lives in the secret box in her closet because Daddy isn't all that crazy about all of Sam's indulgences. "It's our little secret," Sam told Dana when he brought home the box for her treasures.

There is one wish that hasn't come true. Dana wants a puppy and Daddy says, "No."

Dana has pleaded her case to Uncle Sammy but to no avail. Uncle Sammy says that a dog is too big a thing and it can't live in the secret box. Dana knows Uncle Sammy has tried to convince Daddy that a dog is OK. She's heard them talk about it. (She eavesdropped. She learned that word in GATE too.)

As Sam walks, she decides it's a good time to try again. She conjures an image of a small, chocolate lab and sends it to Sam. Sam laughs out loud, "You are persistent. I'll give you that."

Dana uses words to plead her case. "You can talk Dad into anything. I know you can. He can never say No to you. You're his…"

Sam snaps, "DANA"

Dana catches herself before the word comes out. Sam takes a breath and calmly proceeds. "Darling, you know that you can't use that word. It's dangerous. We've talked about this."

Dana hugs Sam closer, if that's possible.

"Sorry Uncle Sammy"

Sam sends comfort to her to let her know he isn't mad. Dana knows he isn't mad. Uncle Sammy's never mad at her.

Lunch Time

Dana is eating lunch with Sheila and talking about dogs. Sheila has two of them.

"Do you walk them?" Dana asks.

Sheila nods, "With Daddy - every night."

Dana thinks about how fun it would be to walk her puppy with Daddy and Uncle Sammy.

Right then Toby runs up to them and tries to grab Sheila's cookie. Dana reaches over and smacks his hand away.

Toby turns to Dana with a menacing glare. Dana scoffs, "Don't you try to scare me Toby Murphy. You are just a bully." Dana doesn't really scare easily, or at all.

Toby looks at Dana and shrugs, "Your Daddy is a fag. My Mommy says so."

Dana isn't sure what that word means but no one uses a word that might be even a little bad about her Daddy. Dana feels anger creep up from her toes to her thighs to her stomach and to her head. She breathes deep. She wants to reach out with her powers and throw Toby all the way across the schoolyard. But, she knows that it's out of the question. Rule #1 - No Powers, No Way, No How.

Dana struggles to be calm. "What does that word mean?" she whispers.

Toby steps closer to her and laughs right in her face. "It means he likes boys in a bad way."

Oh, she understands now, probably way better than Toby does.

It had never dawned on her that Daddy and Uncle Sammy were anything but ok until that day a few years ago when the three of them talked about it. She still really doesn't get what the 'deal' is. But, she knows very well what she can say and what she can't.

Dana taps her foot, staring at ugly ole' Toby right in the eye. Dana is considering her options. Powers are out even though seeing Toby dangling from that big pine tree would be pretty funny.

She smiles, somewhat cruelly, and pops him right in the nose. Decks him with one good punch.

Toby falls to the ground in a heap. Dana kicks him in the shin (Daddy had told her once to always fight dirty) and then throws her weight on him.

"Say you're sorry," Dana says, "And then I'll get off."

Toby glares at her. She digs her knee into his stomach. "Say it or I'll punch you again."

Toby tries to get up but he is good and pinned. But, he doesn't back down, "Fag, he's a fag."

Dana sees red. She reaches for his hair and pulls hard with one hand and punches him in the nose again with the other. Toby starts to cry and mutters, "Sorry, sorry."

Next thing she knows Ms. Littlesmith pulls her up and Ms. Garcia picks up Toby. Dana is marched off the playground.

One Hour Later

Dana is sitting in the corner 'contemplating the error of her ways.' The principal, Ms. Nelson, had told her to sit in the corner chair and do this. Dana has no idea what this means but she knows when to sit and shut up. Dana heard Ms. Nelson's assistant call Daddy so she knows what's next.

Ms. Nelson stands up when Dean walks in the room. She extends a hand and says, "Mr. Winchester, please be seated."

Dana looks at Daddy to see if he's mad. He doesn't look mad to Dana. Daddy gives Dana a long stare. She realizes he's checking to see if she's hurt or afraid. When he figures out that she's only angry, he gives her a tiny smile and turns to Ms. Nelson.

"My daughter looks fine. How is the other kid?"

"Your daughter beat him pretty seriously Mr. Winchester. We need to discuss appropriate disciplinary action for Dana."

Dana looks at Ms. Nelson and asks, "Can we have this discussion without Dana in the room?"

Ms. Nelson looks surprised at the request but nods.

Dean turns to Dana. "Go to the car."

Dana nods, gets up and heads to the car.

Dana walks slowly through the parking lot and is surprised to see Sam sitting in the driver's seat. She hadn't sensed him there. For the first time all day, she's a bit scared. Sam has shut himself off to her and she hates when he does that. It usually means Uncle Sammy and Daddy are having adult time. But, that isn't the case now.

"What's wrong?" she asks, concerned, as she opens the door. Sam looks at her perplexed. "Uh, you beat up a kid Dana. I know you know that's not OK."

"I didn't use my powers." Dana is honest to goodness confused. She didn't use her powers, she gave Toby what he deserved, she fought dirty and she doesn't have a scratch on her. All in all - she thinks she did remarkably well. She is really proud of herself.

Sam still looks confused. "You can't get into fights darling - you know that."

"I can defend my family, right?"

"Of course"

"He called Daddy a bad name. You would have been proud of me. I controlled myself."

"You broke his nose."

Dana smiles, "Good."

Sam exhales and opens up to her. What was the word? He asks soundlessly.

She shakes her head. Won't say it.

Sam's face freezes and Dana shakes her head vigorously. No no - not that word. No Uncle Sammy, not that word.

Sam looks relieved. What word darling? It's ok to tell me.

Dana soundlessly says the word, very softly. Sam looks sad but smiles at her. "It is impossible to be mad at you, you know that?"

That Night

Dana is sitting in her room. They think she is asleep. Daddy and Uncle Sammy are talking about her punishment. Dana can sort of hear Dad's words but Sammy didn't shut down and she can hear him loud and clear.

"She was defending you Dean."

"I realize that and, that kid is a brat and deserved a smack down, but I have to punish her."

"I'm not talking about the punishment. She's 9 now. She is going to be teased. She didn't use her powers today but she might next time. And, what if 'brother' slips out?" Sam pauses not wanting to go on but knows it has to be said. "I've thought for a while that there would come a time when I'd need to leave, that my presence would be a problem for her and for you. I think it's that time."

Dana thinks her heart has stopped. Uncle Sammy leave?

NO NO NO NO NO

Dana freezes. She transmitted that loud and clear.

"Shit - she's awake."

Dana runs out of her room and throws herself at Sam, tears running down her face. "No no not leaving no won't have it no no no not ok not ok."

The table and chairs start rocking. Dean reaches down to pick her up and she shakes him off.

Dana fights for control. She stops shaking the furniture and slows down the sobs. She clings to Sam's legs.

"You. Cannot. Leave," she chokes out between hiccups.

"Dana," Sam starts, "this isn't your decision to make. You and Daddy need to be safe. I'll still see you. You and Daddy can come and visit. I'll just be a little further away."

"No, I'll be good, I promise. No fights. Toby can say anything he wants. I'll be good - I understand there are secrets and I'll keep them, I promise." Dana is sobbing hard again. Sam reaches down to pick her up and she stomps her feet. Sam pulls away.

Dana straightens up and wipes the back of her hand across her tear and snot streaked face. She pulls herself together as if she were 50, not 9.

She first looks Sam straight in the eye and turns to Dean and does the same.

She gets her tears under control.

She clearly wants to make her point.

"Ok, so you're brothers and you … you do stuff that mommies and daddies do."

She breathes deeply and continues calmly. "I get that. It's OK to me. And, I get that normal doesn't think it's ok and it's a secret. But, we aren't normal. I move things and talk to Uncle Sammy without talking. There are spells and sigils and weapons and bad things."

Sam and Dean stare at her dumbfounded. They didn't really think she had quite this clear a picture.

"So, Uncle Sammy stays because someone or something could tear me into tiny pieces and I won't tell AND I won't use my powers."

Stunned silence.

A nine year old just laid down the law in the Winchester household.

Sam turns to Dean. Dean stares at Dana.

After a minute, Dean reaches down into his boot and pulls out his knife. He puts a small gash in his hand, reaches for Sam and does the same. Last he reaches for Dana and puts a tiny prick in her thumb, just enough for a drop of blood. They join hands and mix the blood. Dean looks at Dana and whispers, "Our secret - just us. We keep it no matter what and we stay together."

Dana smiles beatifically and throws her arms around both of them and squeezes for all she's worth.

After a couple of minutes, she mumbles, "Ok, so can I have a puppy, please?" Dana Winchester knows all about fighting dirty.
