It was time for a retreat, Sam could see that. Surrounded. Outnumbered.

The problem was, there wasn’t really any avenue of retreat. Her eyes swept the room, taking in the exits, considering the positions of each blockage, each potential delay. Her first steps were tentative. The last thing she needed was to draw attention to herself.

She melted into the background, huddled near the wall. She kept her eyes down, except while scouting out her next movement. Just a little more. She reached the safety of the dark hallway and turned her back to the room, taking the remaining steps quickly, slipping the door shut and breathing a sigh of relief.

Though the dark of the room was comforting, she reached for the light and exhaled slowly as the room brightened. “What are you looking at?” she asked the mirror as she set the glass in her hand on the sink counter.

As bathrooms went, this one was small. No bathtub, only a shower stall, the toilet and sink. And it was yellow. Cheery little sunflowers and daisies surrounded her. Sam locked the door and paced the two steps the little room allowed before dropping to a seat on the toilet.

Lt. Col. Samantha Carter did not admit defeat easily, but the last few hours with these people…She shook her head. Maybe her frustration had more to do with the fact that she wasn’t at work…in fact had been ordered out of the mountain for the weekend, especially when General O’Neill had discovered that her brother had been planning this party.

She picked up her drink and tossed back the last dregs of the overly sweet punch, grimacing as she swallowed. Her phone rang and she nearly cried in relief as she saw the caller id. “Carter.”

“Hey Carter.”

“Sir.”

“Watcha doing?”

“I’m at my brother’s party, Sir.”

“Its awfully quiet.”

“I’m in the bathroom, Sir.”

“Oh, I-“

“No, not like that.”

“Are you hiding in the bathroom, Carter?”

“I am not hiding.”

“They’re family Carter.”

She sighed. “I know, Sir. It just seems so…it’s frightening..”

“Frightening?”

She sighed again. “They’re all so…normal, Sir…I don’t even know half the people here.”

“Isn’t that the point of a reunion, Carter?”

“They have name tags. With smiley faces.”

“Oh, well…that’s not too bad.”

“My Aunt Gilda thinks I’m my father.”

“Its probably just the uniform.”

“I’m not wearing my uniform, Sir.” She shook her head, something suddenly dawning on her. “You set me up for this, didn’t you.”

“Me?” His voice was filled with mock indignation, confirming her suspicion. “Why wouldn’t I accommodate the brother of one of my officers when he asks me to make sure she got leave when he had a family reunion planned?”

“They have a karaoke machine, Sir.”

“Karaoke? Really?”

“They made me sing, Sir.”

She thought she heard him chuckle. “Sounds like fun, Carter.”

“You’ve never heard me sing, Sir.”

This time he did chuckle. “No, I haven’t. Okay, just hang tight. I’m sending in an extraction team.”

“Sir?”

“Daniel should be there any minute to get you. We have…a situation.”

She stood. “What kind of situation?”

“One that requires I send Daniel to get you and bring you back.”

“Very good, Sir.”

“Just stay put. He’ll be there any minute.”

“Yes, Sir.”

Sam slipped the phone back into the pocket of her dress and turned to the mirror. The relief was clear on her face, and she smiled when she heard the doorbell. Cracking the door, she glanced down the hall toward the front door. Her sister-in-law opened the door, and Daniel’s smile lit up. Sam instantly felt more at home. She stepped out of the cheery little bathroom and moved toward them, nearly throwing herself into Daniel’s arms. “Thank you,” she whispered as she let go.

“Hey, Sam. Jack sent me. Seems we have a situation.”

She nodded solemnly, then turned to her brother who had just joined his wife. “I’m sorry, guys. It looks like I’m going to have to run.”

“Sorry to spoil the party.” Daniel said with a smile. “We have need of her…expertise on an important matter.

“Of course, we understand. Will you be able to come back? We have more games planned.”

Sam suppressed the shudder that wanted to explode and bit her lip. “I won’t know until I see what the situation is. I’ll call.” She kissed her brother’s cheek, then called goodbye to the rest of the party before looking to Daniel for the impetus to actually leave.

He took the hint, hooking his hand in her arm and stepping neatly back through the front door. As they climbed into his car, he grinned. “Karaoke, eh?”

She punched him lightly in the arm and he feigned hurt before starting the car. “So, what’s this situation?”

“Just a little rescue operation.”

She looked at him. “Who?”

Blue eyes met blue eyes, and Daniel’s glittered with amusement. “You.”

She opened her mouth, then closed it. “Jack set you up.” Daniel offered, waving his fingers at her brother who was on the porch watching them. Sam shook her head.

“He did this to get back at me for that incident with Major Davis.”

“Pretty much. So, how was the bathroom?”

“Yellow.” She responded, lifting a hand in farewell for her family gathering on the front porch to wave her off. “It was yellow Daniel…with sunflowers.” She said through the forced smile.

He shuddered and started them moving. “Good thing I got there in time then.”
