Evidently the problem with Cyclops in the movies is the large eyepiece the character has to wear. In rehearsal, he evidently did a great job, but one they slapped on the gear, it turns out that not only can't you see his eyes, but his cheeks have to remain relatively stable to support the rest of the piece. And if you can't move your cheeks and we can't see your eyes, you can't really emote or act. I also didn't like the way the writers went with him, either.

I thought they could've done a decent Dark Phoenix storyline if they'd just focused on and stuck with it. Similarly, they could've done a decent "Cure!" storyline if they'd just stuck with it. You're right that the movie has way too much crammed into it with very little pay off or resolution to any of it. The resolution to the Phoenix storyline was particularly badly done.

I like your movie better. Plus yours would have allowed them to have more characters, and X-Men has always been an ensemble cast.

I also don't remember Mystique being such a badass.

Against homo sapiens, she always was. But even a rather wussy mutant would usually kick her ass. And speaking of overuse of plot elements, the whole Mystique subplot could have been used to great effect, and just felt like a tacked on afterthought now. Sucky, sucky movie, despite a lot of very good ideas incorporated. And yeah, stupid Magneto.
