It wasn't Swaggert, it was Oral Roberts (I grew up in Tulsa, and was ashamed as hell of his behavior.) The claim was that he was to collect enough cash to build a 900-foot-tall Jesus statue, or God would call in his chips. The only part that got built was a set of 'praying hands' that now sit at the entrance of Oral Roberts University (they used to sit at the exit off the highway, where EVERYONE could see them as they entered the city.)

Oh yeah, Swaggert was the dude who was in a sex scandal. I should really look that stuff up before I rely entirely on memory.

No worries - there was a rash of TV preachers behaving badly at that time.
