"I seem to recall babysitting you at the party, or trying to, though you insisted on running off to get into trouble anyway. Perhaps you need to look into having a keeper?" Mello grinned and waited for her reaction. He knew he acted childish around her, but somehow he couldn't help it. Rukia was just far too much fun to tease!

"I'm sorry," she said, gritting her teeth, "if I was under the influence of Mary-san's punch and didn't know what the hell I was doing. And even if I didn't I would not need you to babysit me as I can take care of myself perfectly fine, thank you very much. And you can just shut up now."

Mello grinned at her. "Oh no, this is far too much fun to stop now. Surely you don't really expect me to, do you? And we all know you like the attention."

Resisting the urge to smack him, Rukia simply took a step forward, attempting to glare him down.

"You know Mello, I cannot stop you from being here with us today because Hitsugaya-taichou invited you, but if you make this night miserable for me, I will certainly return the favor."

"You already threatened to "dress me", so it certainly sounded like you had that intention anyway. Why shouldn't I treat you accordingly? Or did you not mean that, either?" Mello advanced a step as well, arching an eyebrow at her questioningly.

"That would be because you did not follow the rules and dress properly," she said, keeping eye contact with him. She was not going to lose to him tonight. "And I am perfectly content to ignoring you the entire night. I wouldn't waste my time trying to make your night miserable. I have better things to do."

"Hey, you try riding a motorcycle in one of those. You couldn't do it either." Mello stared into her eyes and fought the urge to laugh. Somehow she managed to be ridiculously cute when angry, maybe because she was so easy to anger. "Glad to hear it. So what are these better things, then? Do they involve the date you claim you're not on, even though no one believes it? Didn't your brother say something about the Tunnel of Love?" He wondered if Rukia would ever realize that people taunted her because she practically encouraged them to do it.

"You could have bought one to change into when you got here," she said, her voice cold. Then she flushed. "Shut up! I am not on a date and I am not going through any damn Tunnel of Love and you have no right to say any of those things to me, so get out of my damn way Mello before I make you."

"Why would I want to do that? I would look stupid in one anyway." He stepped closer again, smile fading, his gaze intense. "I haven't said anything so awful to you as all that, so don't act like I have. I could really mess with your mind, but I haven't; I always let you get away with running away or insulting me and ignoring it. What do you think, should we change that pattern?"

"You don't know that. You've never worn one have you?" she asked, making a face. Then she stopped, startled by the look on Mello's face. She took a step back. "Wh-what are you talking about?"

Mello smiled and watched her go. He had managed to scare her? Maybe she had better instincts than he had expected. This promised to be an interesting evening.
