Being an ethical book buyer, ie. avoiding Amazon if at all possible, just got a whole lot more difficult: they're buying up The Book Depository.

One decent alternative I can suggest is BetterWorldBooks.co.uk. Any more suggestions are very welcome here.

used.addall.com -- the megasearch engine for used books (new books at addall.com). Offers checkboxes for which sites to search, so you can leave out Amazon. Incredibly useful. Mentioned of course at a convention panel by what's-his-name at Small Beer Press.

In the US at least, powells.com works for me. I hadn't heard of bibliofile's suggestion above.

Oh, pooh! Having said that, now I've switched to ebooks as far as possible, I don't have much alternative but Kindle. However, I did buy physical books from The Book Depository in preference to Amazon.
