One of my favourite Alien stories was about how they ended up with the iconic look of the Nostromo which started as a more conventional SF starship, especially the bridge, and ended up with the cramped, claustrophobic sets which really make the film come together.

Again, it was lack of money and time driven compromises.

Dan O'Bannon's plan for Alien was based around the notion of male rape

Really?? I always thought it was based around fears related to pregnancy - the alien lifeform moving under skin, then having to come out somehow all kind of built into that for me.

Weird. I'll have to re-watch and see if I see it differently.

I was surprised too but in that article O'Bannon makes it pretty explicit that that's what he was doing. I was thinking along the pregnancy lines too.

Looking at the pictures I can see the whole phallus thing - now I'm wondering just how much of the original film I actually saw, and how much I was hiding behind a cushion for.

I have, somewhere, a book of all the contributing artists' design drawings (Ron Cobb comes to mind) which I prefer as you get to see visions of the ship, planet, costumes etc. too. There is the sense (as with all films) of the compromise of time and money versus vision.

PS I once drew a fanzine cover for Hawkida (insert own link) based on the pilot creature sat beneath the giant phallus i the alien space ship. She'd never seen the film and thought I was some sort of pervert...

Rifling through some zines I've just seen it now, the Hospital issue of Cosmic Hairdryer - and I did the logo in the top left corner.
