but the functionality of the writing and the absence of much characterisation left me a little cold.

That's disappointing. I love C. L. Moore's pulp fiction from the 30s.

I expect I'll be getting round to reading her 'Jirel of Joiry' and 'Northwest Smith' stories soon. I think there was even a crossover story between the two series, which sounds bizarre, so I must find that too.

You might enjoy the Northwest Smith stories more. I think they're among the best of all the stories of the sword-and-planet sub-genre. Along with Leigh Brackett's.
