The SF Masterworks relaunch

Apr 03, 2010 07:05

If you live in the UK by now you may have seen the new cover design for Gollancz's relaunched SF Masterworks series. Yes, they're garish, perhaps a little too garish. They clearly want the covers to stand out, or perhaps literally leap off the bookshelves into your sweaty palms. A Gollancz rep, speaking on condition of anonymity at Eastercon ( Read more... )

I obviously have a bias here, but it's worth saying that the relaunch is going to continue with a book a month for quite a while - with both pbs and hbs, depending on what rights are available. So both Cat's Cradle and Childhood's End are on their way pretty soon, and further in the future there's The Female Man, a big clutch of Wells, The Body Snatchers... (And I think the covers for the Vonnegut and Clarke are especially good.)

That's great news, and thanks for the additions to the forthcoming titles. Back in 2005 I mentioned I'd like to see Body Snatchers on the Masterworks list. But the one I really want to see is Delany's The Einstein Intersection, complete with Peter Elson's cover for the 1977 Sphere edition.

And yes, that Cat's Cradle cover is lovely. I might have to replace my recently-purchased Penguin Modern Classics copy with this far cooler-looking one.

The graphics are all but unreadable, but perhaps that's just the scale.

I also wonder why there's no 'R.' in Samuel Delany. Maybe it will be there on the finished article.

That's, uh, a very good point to which I will alert the relevant authorities. (And I'd note that the re-reissued Masterwork of Babel-17 bills him as Samuel R. Delany.)

The Aldiss looks good, but I am not so sure on some of the covers, I dont like the bleached out look, and am surprised that they haven't done a different cover altogther.

In saying that, I like the Moore Covers, so much so, I have a bid on one of his prints in the art show.
