This is just two and a half weeks away:

Acorn Music and Verse II

What: A house sing in Ann Arbor, Michigan, for filkers and other musically inclined people. Come prepared to participate - song or word, though we'll let you just listen if you insist. Bring a friend.

When: Saturday, December 1, 2007, from 1:00 PM until sometime in the evening. You can attend all or part of the event

Who: Hosted by Hope Dundas and Maggi Rohde, and supported by Susan Moerdyk & Peter Alway.

Where: Great Oak Cohousing Common House, 500 Little Lake Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. There are directions/maps/etc here. We've got a big dining hall to play in, with kid-friendly surroundings. Call Hope Dundas (734) 368-6984 if you get lost on the way.

Food and drink: Bring a snack, a dish to share, etc.....what food & drink we have is whatever we bring. In the past, we've ordered pizza for dinner to sustain us into the evening.

What to expect:

Acorn Music and Verse is a reincarnation of the Fen and Filk house-sings that Susan and my brother Dave held in Glimmerglass house. We're carrying forth many traditions from the old gatherings, though we can be flexible to suit a new set of participants and our new setting.

In the past we've been using a "bardic circle" format. Each person present takes a turn, rotating through the circle. When your turn comes, you can sing, play, or recite a piece; or ask another participant for a request; or you can simply pass. Some people perform in every round, others are happy to pass most of the time. All are fine. We also allow "electronic guests" for participants who have the occasional special recording they'd like to share, though I really want to encourage live performance over recordings.

We have a tradition of a "new material" round after dinner. It doesn't have to be a new original song, but something you haven't performed at Acorn Music & Verse before. This being our second event at this location, that's not much of a challenge, but over the long run, it keeps you from just playing the same material over and over.

Great Oak has kids' play space both outside and inside the Common House, so that parents can bring children without them getting bored or underfoot.

Things officially start at 1:00, though the music generally starts rolling closer to 2:00. Food orders (usually pizza) go out around 4:30, and around 5:00 we break for dinner, followed by more music.

I hope all of you local folks can come for some or all of Acorn Music & Verse!
