Morbid Curiosity takes you to Boston? (Arisia wrap up)

Jan 19, 2010 22:29

Hello Kiddies,

I copped the name of this post from a book I'm currently reading, which also greatly explains my state of mind as of late. Arisia was an interesting experience. It seemed to blend together elements of events that I have been to before, but never really thought of in the same context. I have had the event on my radar for a number of years but my irrational fear of New England always kept me away. Boston to me is 'the forbidden city', where the cold reigns and the streets are a maze that will swallow you up. This was only the third time I had ever been there in my life, and it remains the enigmatic mystery. Maybe if I go back enough times I can conquer that fear. New England Phobia aside, I was amazed at how easily I fit in. It reminded me somewhat of the various kink events, but also of the early KISS Conventions and other flights of fandom before they got too big for themselves and went corporate or bust. (Richie Ranno are you listening?)

I drove up with compatriots catelynn and volund (a Leather Family outing!), and promptly crashed when we landed. I thought I had missed most of the con activities when they woke me up for dinner, but things go way on into the night apparently! I attended a few panels and then went into a drum circle of all things. Cathartic was the best way I can describe it as I drummed, danced, and watched wonderful people do amazing things. I was a participant not a spectator, and it felt good.
Saturday was more fun with panels and screenings as we moved into the host hotel. I attended the masquerade and hopped some of the suite parties. When those proved to be too crowded for my taste, I went downstairs where there was a dance party. Now I avoid that shit like the plague, but found myself once again oddly fitting in. Playing the rock star bit with some fetishy-type clothes, I danced, flirted, and rocked out in what was once again best described as cathartic. The DJ played a string of rock hits and when (without ANY prompting from me) he played Rock & Roll All Night, I led everybody there in a rocking revival! :) The lack of judgemental attitudes and 'you don't belong' vibe really impressed me about the whole thing. There was lots more fun spread out over the weekend, including the Evil Bunny making an appearance. I was VERY impressed at how well run this event was. We could learn quite a bit from this part of the collective. I made some new friends and saw some old ones running about (waves to epinephric and vvalkyri). I spent some time among a lovely group of folks who called themselves The Kingdom of Arcadia. I could see myself easily getting involved with this event on a larger level, but that will remain to be seen. Many folks seemed surprised to see me there, but it was a natural progression for me from the Chiller events, the Comic Cons, and the Kink Events. Thanks to all that encouraged me to go and made my time there so nice. A nod and a smile to the little crow that planted the seed. Thank you. :) Boston is still scary.

Here's today's video, a trailer for a really fucked up book. Go read it now. And hide.
