My uncle Irv comments

There was a time set aside in Uncle Irv's wonderful memorial service for comments from anyone who wanted to share. (Uncle Gary, also a schoolteacher, told us afterwards that Irv had insisted "Make sure they're quick. Two minutes max, or you take a zero." Some of us would have taken a zero on the assignment.) During the time leading up to the ( Read more... )

I had Mr. Lester for English at DGS in 1988-89. He was awesome. I still use his "Star List" when writing formally. I was thinking about him the other day and decided to Google him. I am heartbroken that he passed away the way he did. Going through his things, if you see a Mickey Mouse comic book written in Russian, I gave that to him the last day of school. He thought it was great. JOE

I had Mr. Lester during this time at DGS too. I wished many times that I kept that star list. Mr. Lester was a great teacher. I was thinking of his and the star list the other day when I decided to Google him and found this... Do you think I could get a copy of the star list from you? - Bob c/o 1990

I had Mr. Lester for English Comp in Fall 1985. Man, what a term and what a great guy. Never before and never again did I have a class or teacher like him. He was firm but fair and didn't cut us slack ( ... )

I had Irv for classes in 84 and 85. He was the most incredile teacher ever!!!I just learned of his passing, and send my prayers to the family. I have a story to share that won't mean much to others, but i did to me. it changed me. My sr. year, my family was going to leave early for vacation for an early grad. gift. I had to take my final a day early, so Irv put me out in the hall with all of my stuff.(class folder included.) I did it, I cheated, I looked up an answer. I got 100% on the final. I had to tell him!!!! "Mr.Lester, I cheated!" his response was "of course you did! But have you learned something?" He gave the A anyway! And I never cheated again!!!Thank you, Irv.

What a drag. I was looking up some of my old teachers, and was shocked that Mr. Lester had died. I had him for senior composition in 1979-80. He was absolutely the best english teacher I ever had. I still apply his lessons when I write, and am passing them on to my children. He will be missed. Patrick M. Cooney, DDS, MD

I went to DGN in the mid 80s also and although I did not have him for a teacher I remember him well. I always heard such good things about him and am sorry to hear this.
