Title: One Last Kiss
Pairing: McShep
Rating: PG
Warnings: Character death
When the Wraith took John Sheppard, all Rodney could think was, one more minute. One more minute and I can save him. And if not - if I don’t get there in time - one kiss. That’s all I ask. One kiss.
He didn’t know who he was talking to - praying to. He didn’t believe in God. Perhaps it was the Ancients he begged for that one moment with Sheppard he had never had the courage to get when the Major was alive and safe and healthy.
When he brought Sheppard back to Atlantis, with John grey-haired and shaking, after the Wraith took most of his life, all Rodney could think was, one more year. Please, just one more year with him to tell him how I feel. To show him how we can be.
Two and a half years later, when they shared quarters together in the City, when Rodney brought John food and helped him to wash and dress himself, every day he thought, one more month. Just another month to show him how much I care. One more month together while he still knows me, knows himself.
When Sheppard was taken to the infirmary, all Rodney could think was, another week…please, just one more week to tell him all I feel, to hold his hand and tell him he won’t die alone.
Ten days later, when he sat by John’s side as his lover drifted in and out of consciousness, Rodney thought, one more day…just one more day to sit by his side and tell him I love him. One more day to figure out how I’m going to live without him - whether I can at all.
Thirteen hours later, with Beckett taking him aside and saying that it would be over very soon, all Rodney thought was, one more hour…that’s all I need. One more hour, please. I can’t let him go just yet. One more hour to say goodbye.
A few minutes later, as Rodney sat beside John, holding his hand and watching him trying to speak, struggling to breathe, as he stroked his hair and said it was okay, he could let go now, all he could think was, one more moment…one more moment to say goodbye.
One more moment.
One last kiss.
