A Good Place For a Dream
Any other boy would make her close her eyes, but Charlie tells her to look everywhere she can as he leads her up the hill.
They’re almost to the top when Katie stops, and gasps. The night sky is red and purple, light flaring up like the embodied streaks of magic.
“Oh!”
His lips quirk. “Look down,” he says, and she does.
The valley below them is on fire, but not, somehow, in a dangerous, violent way. It’s beautiful. Soft. And there’s something about it that feels so ancient and reverent that she wants to cry.
“What is it?” she asks, awed.
“Something you probably won’t ever see again,” he tells her. “The dragons only do it once every ten years, or something like that. Most people miss it, ‘cause you never know when it’s going to happen.”
Katie glances at him. “But you know, don’t you?”
Charlie shrugs. “Sometimes, when I’m lucky.”
She shakes her head and leans back against him, her fingers catching his. He’s too modest, too mysterious, yet still confident and open-what a contradiction she’s found.
“I think I understand now,” she says at length. “Why you left everything and came here, I mean. I’d give it all up, too, just for this.”
He nods. “It’s a good place for a new start.”
“It’s like a dream.”
Charlie laughs, not quite with her, not quite at her; not quite at anything at all, really, except perhaps the truth of what she’s just said. You can lose yourself, at times and places like these.
“Yeah…”
Katie settles herself more comfortably, and then together, they stare out at the sea of light.
