Perpetuating Racism

You know what I think is totally asinine? This whole drama surrounding the Tea Party rep who superimposed an image of Obama on a chimpanzee baby as a joke.

And here's why: Who hasn't seen some version of this image before?

I get that there at least used to be this whole historically inaccurate opinion that blacks came from monkeys while whites ( Read more... )

at best it outs the tea party rep as hopelessly ignorant about the history of racist symbolism in the US. or even much more recent history of the same comparison generating racism controversy.

at worst the tea partier is covering their ass by feigning ignorance. i guess i would believe either, and either way they deserve a raft of shit for it.

Totally a fair opinion. I just overall wish it wasn't an issue for anyone.

Me being the perpetual optimist I always feign on the side of thinking people aren't out hurt others with images and words that are fueled with hatred... but sometimes I definitely do think that perhaps it's better to submit to the idea that people really are that cruel. Cartoons like the New York Post one definitely make me feel like perhaps all my optimism about humanity is misplaced. :/

Seriously, I wish you were correct. This isn't ignorance, it really is malice.

my personal favorite monkey reference would have to be christopher walken's in "the prophecy" in which he referred to everyone as "talking monkies" (i love that movie).

but, i don't really think this is so much about racism as it is about a VERY vocal minority who can't get over that they lost the last election and keep looking for a reason to impeach him (i think we set a bad precedent with clinton). they keep trying to say that he is not an american citizen because he was not born in the u.s.. in the end, i think it just shows off their own ignorance. they really need to go back and review how someone can be a citizen (it is possible to be born in another country and still be born an american citizen).

this talking monkey will shut up now.
