[ Tony is technically ready, because Pepper came down an hour ago and manhandled him into something more presentable, forcing coffee down his neck, and basically making a fuss. So he's ready, but that doesn't mean he's not working. Tongue caught between his teeth as he slides a bit of wiring back into place on a chip, watching the whole machine in front of him finally flicker to life.
Of course, that's when JARVIS filters through the system. ] Sir, Captain Rogers is here.
[ Tony has enough time to put down his instruments, straighten himself up, and swivel his stool round, rising just as Steve comes into view.
[ Laughing a little. ] Hell no, unless you count engineering, then no, I haven't an artistic bone in my body.
[ Tony does count engineering. It took a lot to design Iron Man, took vision even after the circuits and chips and wires were all sorted and slotted together.
But he doesn't want to talk about himself right now. Steve's practically offering insight on a silver plate and Tony wants to know ] Do you paint? Draw? [ Wandering past a rather strange statue where he stops to peer at it. ] Sculpt headless dragon things? Is that a dragon? I don't even know.
I think engineering takes quite a bit of artistic talent. [ Commenting honestly before taking a closer look at the statue that caught Tony's eye. ]
I think it's a... Lion? [ Reading up on the small description. ] From China. And painting isn't really my thing but I don't mind it. [ He really just preferred to sketch. Actually, he wondered who had gotten his old sketchbook or if it was even around at all now. Huh. ]
[ Glancing down on the little museum map he realized they were in the Asian section and not the American. As much as he loved seeing all the culturally diverse works, he really wanted to check out the American exhibits. ] It's a little known fact. Very few people know about it. Actually...
[ He was pretty sure Bucky and Peggy were the only one's who really knew. Howard too, of course, because Howard had taken a look through his sketch books several times when designing Cap's uniform. ] I think we need to go this way.
Have you been drawing lately? [ Tony seems to be seizing on this fact like it's fascinating to him, and truth be told, it probably is. As much as he likes the legend, he's becoming increasingly attached to the man himself.
And besides, he knows what it's like to have a hobby, to take the edge off with it. Tony may work with machines, but there's nothing like tinkering at 2am when he can't sleep. ]
When time allows for it. [ Or when he can't sleep. Much like Tony in that aspect, drawing is Steve's way of expressing himself and often letting go of inhibitions.
He sort of speeds through the hall, to the next room, sparing as much of a glance to all the pieces as he can without really studying them. This place was much bigger than he anticipated. So much bigger. Steve was betting he'd have to come back here with a bit more free time on his hands. ]
how are you awake? :OstarveforscotchSeptember 4 2011, 10:46:16 UTC
[ Tony's mostly just amused by his enthusiasm, but he can understand, to an extent. He knows if he got displaced, the first thing he would do is read up about engineering. ] Neat.
[ He doesn't ask any more, but makes a mental note to ask Pepper what sketch supplies someone would need. Maybe they can find him some supplies. If he tells Pepper to do it, then it won't seem so weird coming from her. ]

[ Finally, they end up in the American art section of the Metropolitan which earns a sign of relief from Steve. So proud that he found it and glad that the directions are accurate enough to navigate through. He starts slow, looking over each piece silently even if they're just as old as him, if not older. Most artists from his era didn't have their stuff displayed like this so it was a treat all of his own.
He paused on one in particular, taking more time to look it over than some of the former. A simple sketch but Steve liked it none the less. ]
D: damn you insomniastarveforscotchSeptember 4 2011, 11:08:09 UTC
[ Steve's eyes light up like a child at Christmas time amidst the art, and Tony's happy (god, how did that happen?) to hang back and watch him, to drag his gaze over the pieces and wonder what it must mean to him now, out of his own time. ]
/rolls aroundcaptainofmoeSeptember 4 2011, 11:11:46 UTC
[ His expression softens and he wants to touch the piece but knows that's probably not considered proper etiquette so he pulls out his hidden sketchbook instead so he can quickly sketch out his own interpretation which-oddly enough, makes him stop to stare at his and the original for a moment. ]
I want a sandwich, do you want a sandwich? starveforscotchSeptember 4 2011, 11:14:27 UTC
[ Tony shifts on his heels at the sound of Steve's voice. He really wants to look at what he's drawing, but it's probably not - Steve might show him his own art when they get to know each other a bit better. Tony needs to work on that. Less sneaking away to the lab every night, more talking. He can do that ... Right? ]
/scurries off to makestarveforscotchSeptember 4 2011, 11:25:16 UTC
[ Tony's not a big pusher. In fact, he's pretty much of the leave it be club. He figures if Steve needs to talk, he'll talk, and until then he's happy to glance at the paintings on the wall in between watching Steve look at them. ]
/waits patientlycaptainofmoeSeptember 4 2011, 11:35:35 UTC
[ Outside of the occasional excitement deprived from a painting or a style of modern art that is completely foreign to Steve, he remains relatively quiet for the rest of their browsing. Nine o'clock rolls around faster than expected as the museum announces it's closing and a flustered expression rises to his face. ]
/hands it over. VOILAstarveforscotchSeptember 4 2011, 11:40:57 UTC
[ Clapping him on the back and smiling a little. ] We can come back. Earlier on in the day too, so you can spend the whole time looking at them if you want. It'll still be here.
Of course, that's when JARVIS filters through the system. ] Sir, Captain Rogers is here.
[ Tony has enough time to put down his instruments, straighten himself up, and swivel his stool round, rising just as Steve comes into view.
Which is - Well. He needs a moment. ] Hi.
