And exactly the kind of Doctor/Companion relationship that I miss desperately on New Who.

Yay Uncle Tewwy! Of course he would come through for us!

*nods*

I really liked "Made of Steel" when I read it (which was after much/all of Season 3 had aired), because of his portrayal of the Ten & Martha relationship. It's not shippy, but it doesn't need to be - they're a good team.

I certainly second that!

I didn't even know these Doctor Who novellas existed...

But after reading your review, I am definitely going to have to jump on Amazon and get one. ;)

I hope you enjoy them. I'd definitely recommend both Made of Steel (which is set very near the start of Season 3 and was written before S3 had aired, but TD had seen a couple of early scripts) and Revenge of the Judoon.

Great review! This sounds really fun...apart from the Martha awesomeness and how great their relationship sounds in this, I have to read it because they meet Conan Doyle! eee!

*grins* Thought that'd interest you ! Sadly he only has two brief cameos - but they're worth it (well I thought they were but I'm not a big C D fan).

I may have to consider for my daughter. She doesn't have a reading problem, she just likes shorter stories.

All three are still available if you want to get them. I am, of course, biased towards the Ten&Martha ones, but the Ten&Rose one's quite good.

What would you start with? 00sophie February 27 2008, 07:32:52 UTC
I’d like to start reading some of the outside stuff as the season has left me wanting more (like eating Chinese food!). I have no idea where to start, any suggestions? I’m only interested in 10/Martha. Shanks!

Made of Steel's the most obvious place since it's the first of the Ten&Martha books. Then they go "Sting of the Zygons" - Stephen Cole, "The Last Dodo" - Jacqueline Rayner, "Wooden Heart" - Martin Day, "Forever Autumn" - Mark Morris, "Sick Building" - Paul Magrs, "Wetworld" - Mark Michalowski, "Wishing Well" - Trevor Baxendale, "The Pirate Loop" - Simon Guerrier, "Peacemaker" - James Swallow, "Revenge of the Judoon" - Terrance Dicks

- with the first and last being the Quick Reads novellas (about 100 pages long). Of the full length novels, I like Peacemaker, The Pirate Loop and Wishing Well best: read TPL and Peacemaker in that order because those two follow on directly from one another (with Wishing Well being the first and taking place 2 days before The Pirate Loop).

I didn't think much of Sick Building, but I know others who thoroughly enjoyed it. You can find detailed plot info (if you want it) over on this Wiki page - just click on the titles in the table.
