The Doctor had checked Donna over to ensure that she hadn't suffered any ill effects from being caught up in the eruption of Vesuvius, prescribed plenty of fluids to combat any incipient dehydration and a long bath.

"The steam will do your lungs good," he'd told her when she'd asked him if he was trying to tell her that she stank. "We were lucky to get off so lightly as we did."

So she'd gone off to the room that the TARDIS had assigned her, and he'd had a quick shower and changed his clothes before heading straight back to the Control Room to run some checks on the TARDIS' essential systems, concerned that she might also have suffered from the ash.

He pulled the monitor towards himself, intending to run the diagnostics, and when his 'screensaver' went off he found himself looking at a copy of the Easter Egg he'd recorded for Sally Sparrow. He hit the play button and it sprang into life:

We're stuck. All of time and space he promised me, now I've got a job in a shop. I've got to support him!

He hit the pause button again, leaving Martha's face, alight with faked annoyance as she teased him yet again about their predicament, on the screen.

He smiled, remembering the way that she'd teased him mercilessly throughout those six weeks they'd been stuck in 1969; they'd both known she'd enjoyed playing house with him just as much as he had: they'd grown so close in those six weeks, and he knew Martha had appreciated that after the awful isolation she'd suffered in 1913. She'd insisted on getting a job because she couldn't bear to just sit and do nothing, and she'd known, without being told, that she wouldn't be able to help him build his 'timey-wimey' device.

So she'd worked in a local bookshop and come home every evening to make dinner with him before spending the rest of the evening watching TV, or reading to each other, or talking. He closed his eyes on a memory of Martha lying the full length of their sofa, her shoulders resting on his thigh as they'd read Shakespeare to each other. He'd read her the Sonnets, starting with the Dark Lady ones, and she'd read him Richard the Second and half of A Midsummer Night's Dream before the TARDIS had returned. He'd wished more than once that they'd had the chance to finish the latter.

Oh Martha Jones, I do miss those evenings with you.

He sighed, then switched off the Easter Egg to concentrate on thoroughly checking the TARDIS' systems.
