Doctor Martha Jones was getting on with her life, carving out a career as a talented psychiatrist gifted at reaching people of all kinds. One day she got an email from her former boss and occasional lover, Jack Harkness:

I'm sending someone to meet you - she knows our mutual friend. Talk to her, please. Love Jack xxx PS Looking forward to my next trip to London.

Martha couldn't help smiling at his postscript - Jack always stayed over at her flat when he made a trip to London - but the rest of his message left her frowning in puzzlement.

Two days later an attractive older woman with brown hair and eyes that had seen too much turned up on Martha's doorstep.

"Hello, you must be Doctor Jones, I'm Sarah Jane Smith." She showed Martha a business card. "Jack Harkness sent me."

"Come in." Martha stepped back and held the door, wondering how this woman knew Jack and wishing she'd thought to ask him.

"Tea?"

"Yes please."

"Take a seat, I'll just be a few minutes." Martha went into her kitchen to make a pot of tea, her mind full of questions. As she waited for the kettle to boil, she peered around the doorframe into the sitting room and saw Sarah Jane examining her bookcase, rather than sitting on the sofa. Somehow she wasn't surprised; if this was a former Companion of the Doctor's, as Jack's email had implied, then she wasn't likely to be the sort of person to sit tamely on a sofa.

She made a pot of tea and set it on a tray with cups, milk, sugar and a plate of biscuits, pushing aside a sudden flash of memory of a tea ceremony she'd attended in Japan during the Year that never happened. Now was not the time to be thinking of such things.

By the time that Martha carried the tray of tea things into her sitting room, Sarah Jane was seated on the sofa, looking as if she'd never stirred. Martha set the tray down on the coffee table.

"How do you take your tea?"

"White, no sugar, thank you.”

Sarah Jane watched as Martha made the tea. Jack had told her that Martha might be a little reserved initially, explaining that the young woman had been through a lot in the very short space of time that she'd been travelling with the Doctor.

"So how do you know Jack?" asked Martha, sitting back in the armchair opposite the sofa.

"He didn't say?"

"Obviously, or I wouldn't have asked." She winced a little, realising how rude that sounded. "Sorry," she said instantly. "I didn't mean to sound so rude."

"I ran into him, literally, several months ago when I was working on a story."

Martha stiffened instinctively at the last word, which Sarah Jane noticed. "Story? You're a writer?"

"Journalist," Sarah Jane corrected. "A freelance investigative journalist." Martha nodded, relaxing again. "We were both chasing the same alien - although for different reasons, obviously. When he debriefed me, we discovered we had a mutual acquaintance in common, so we stayed in touch."

Martha didn't ask if the debriefing had been literal as well as metaphorical, but knowing Jack, she wouldn't have been surprised to learn that it had. "So why's he sent you to me now, if he's known you for months?"

"I think he thought it might do us both good. There are quite a few former Companions of the Doctor around, but we haven't tended to get together. Jack knows what it's like to not have many people to whom you can really talk about life with the Doctor."

"So he thinks we should form a self-help group, does he? Companions Reunited, is it?" Martha didn't mean to sound quite so bitter, but she remembered only too clearly the couple of times that Jack had tried to get her to open up to him about her travels with the Doctor, and how she'd mostly resisted.

"Would that be such a bad thing?" asked Sarah Jane gently.

Martha looked down into her tea cup, thinking about the fact that the Doctor had once trusted this woman, and the fact that Jack apparently also had faith in her. "I suppose not," she conceded.

Sarah Jane smiled. "Good. So how did you meet up with the Doctor?"

Martha explained about her unexpected trip to the Moon and meeting a Plasmavore and the Judoon. Sarah Jane listened attentively and Martha found herself relaxing a little more as she talked. Sarah Jane explained about her own first meeting with the Doctor, how she'd pretended to be her Aunt Lavinia, but the Doctor had seen through her ruse, and how she'd snuck aboard the TARDIS and ended up in mediaeval England, meeting a Sontaran named Linx, with whom she had initially believed the Doctor was working.

"What did he look like, when you met him?" asked Martha curiously. She knew that Jack had met an earlier incarnation of the Doctor who'd looked rather different, and from what she'd learnt of regeneration, she assumed that the Doctor whom Sarah Jane had first known might have looked different too.

"He was tall with silver hair. He wore velvet jackets, ruffled shirts and bow ties with smart trousers - he looked a real dandy. That was his third incarnation, I think. I also travelled with his next incarnation, who was younger, with masses of curly brown hair - he seemed to be all eyes and teeth. Oh and he wore the most ridiculously long scarf - a knitted one that he claimed Nostradamus' wife had made for him."

Martha heard the affection in Sarah Jane's voice and suspected that she, like Jack and Martha herself, had loved the Doctor, and maybe she still did, although Martha felt it was too soon to discuss such a subject.

"Then I met him again last year, when I was working on a story about a school. He'd regenerated several times since I last saw him and he was back to being tall, but he looked so young!" She closed her eyes, remembering his tall skinny frame and the way he'd picked her up when he'd said goodbye.

Martha, watching Sarah Jane, was certain then that the older woman had loved, and probably still loved, the Doctor. "Do you still miss it? The travelling and exploring?"

Sarah Jane nodded. "Oh yes, yes I do. I don't miss it quite as much as I did before I met him again. I'm too busy for one thing - I've just become a mother for the first time."

Martha's eyebrows shot up in surprise. Surely not? She wasn't sure just how old Sarah Jane was, and she knew that advances in IVF treatment meant that women were able to have babies when they were Sarah Jane's age, but she didn't look like a woman who'd given birth recently.

Sarah Jane caught Martha's scrutiny and guessed some of what she was thinking. "I adopted a son - he's 12."

"Oh." Martha wondered why, but felt it wasn't her place to ask.

"You're a very unusual young woman, Doctor Jones," Sarah Jane observed after a few minutes of silence, during which they both drank more tea.

"Why?"

"You've advanced very fast in your career, considering how short a time ago you qualified. You've obviously got a lively mind, if your bookshelves are any indicator, yet you're not asking me many questions."

Martha shrugged. "I listen, I observe, I learn."

"Is that your motto?"

Martha looked astonished. "Certainly not. It's my work habit. I ask questions when they're necessary, but often I can learn just as much, if not more, simply by listening to what people tell me, and what they don't."

"And what have you learnt about me?" asked Sarah Jane curiously.

"That you care very much for the Doctor and that he's had a significant influence on you. I think he hurt you once, but you've forgiven him now. You find Jack compelling, but you're wary of him. You're very anxious about having an adopted son."

"How did you - " Sarah Jane broke off, astonished.

"You've been fiddling with your ring since you mentioned you had adopted a son," Martha pointed out. "You'd been fairly composed until that point. When you spoke of Jack, there was wariness in your eyes, but you wouldn't have stayed in touch with him if you didn't find him fascinating." She paused, looking at Sarah Jane for confirmation, and the older woman nodded, clearly still surprised. "When you talked of meeting the Doctor again, your face and voice spoke of your affection for him." She swallowed. "I guessed that he'd hurt you, knowing that he'd hurt Jack and hurt me. I don't think it's deliberate, most of the time, he just doesn't see us in the same way that we see each other."

"You read people very well - I suppose that explains your career advancement. How did you learn to do that so young?"

"Necessity," Martha answered cryptically. She liked Sarah Jane's directness and common sense, but she wasn't sure yet just how close a friend she would become.

Sarah Jane was intrigued by Martha Jones. According to what she'd been able to discover, Martha was only a few years older than the Doctor's previous Companion whom she'd met at Deffry Vale, yet there was an air of experience and maturity about Martha that would be more fitting in someone at least a decade older. She found herself wondering just what Martha had experienced whilst travelling with the Doctor. Two things were clear to Sarah Jane: Martha was wary of her - which was understandable, given she'd appeared more or less out of nowhere, claiming to be a friend of Jack Harkness and the Doctor; and however it was that the Doctor had hurt Martha, it was still painful for her, even though Jack had said that he'd last seen the Doctor several months ago. She came to a decision. "Let me tell you about the day I stopped travelling with the Doctor," she said, and Martha looked up with real curiosity in her face.

Two hours after she'd arrived, Sarah Jane prepared to leave Martha's flat. "So I'll see you next Wednesday, at noon?" she said, shaking hands with Martha. "And if you want to talk in the meantime, you've got my card."

"Thanks. I look forward to it." Martha stepped forward and hugged the older woman. "Thank you for telling me your story."

Sarah Jane hugged Martha back, marvelling at how small yet how strong this young woman was. "Thank you for listening." She stepped away, squeezed Martha's hand briefly, then left, waving briefly as she headed for her car.

Martha and Sarah Jane soon fell into a routine of meeting at Sarah Jane's house each week for lunch, whilst Luke was at school. For Sarah Jane it was a bit of normality in an otherwise random life and since Martha usually worked two or three evenings a week, and often part of each weekend as well, she always took an afternoon off during the week, which she now spent with Sarah Jane. They took it in turns to provide lunch, with Sarah Jane cooking one week and Martha bringing takeaway the next, although Sarah Jane was amused to discover that Martha's idea of take away consisted of salads and bread from the local deli, not pizza or Chinese or some other junk food.

One week Sarah Jane told Martha that it would be half term the following week. "Alan, Maria's dad, is taking them out to the cinema for the afternoon, but they're having lunch here with me. Would you like to meet them?"

Martha raise one eyebrow at her. "Are you asking me to give them an evaluation?"

"Am I that transparent?" asked Sarah Jane ruefully.

Martha laughed. "I'm afraid so. I'll meet them and talk to them, and I'll give you an unofficial opinion, will that do?"

Sarah Jane nodded. "Yes, thank you."

So the following week, Martha had lunch with Sarah Jane, Luke, Maria and Clyde. The three youngsters were clearly impressed to meet another time-traveller, and Martha got the distinct impression that Clyde was even more interested than he was letting on. After lunch they went off to meet Alan with a lot of laughter and teasing, and Sarah Jane watched them go with a fond look. Then she turned to Martha with an expectant air.

"Three normal, healthy kids," Martha said. "Luke comes over as a little socially inept, but most people will put that down to geekiness, given his interest in science and technology, and the more experience he gets of life, the less noticeable that will become. Clyde's got a caring heart hidden under that brash exterior - I think he's fonder of you than he'd willingly admit. Maria's got a bit of a hero-worship thing for you, which is perfectly understandable if her mother's not around that much. And listening to them, they make Torchwood Three look like juvenile delinquents, to be honest."

Sarah Jane laughed. "Perhaps we'd better not tell Jack that."

"Probably best not to," Martha agreed with a smile.

Another week they met on Martha's birthday - not that she'd told Sarah Jane; Jack had rung and mentioned it. "I can't get away from here to come up and help her to celebrate," he had told her, "So will you do something to make it special, please? Her last birthday was a dead loss, and I want this one to be better."

"I'll see what I can do," Sarah Jane promised, wondering why it was so important to Jack.

"You're a sweetheart, Sarah Jane. I'll make it up to you one day."

Sarah Jane laughed. "Go chase aliens," she said affectionately. "I'll see you again."

"You can count on it," Jack answered fervently.

Sarah Jane ordered pizza, just for once, and checked that she had some decent wine in the house, then wished that Jack had given her more warning so that she could have got Martha a card as well.

Ten minutes later Martha knocked at Sarah Jane's door. "Hello. Happy birthday!" Sarah Jane said cheerfully.

A frozen look appeared on Martha's face momentarily, then was gone. "Thank you. Did Jack tell you?"

Sarah Jane nodded, wondering what Jack hadn't warned her about. "Do you mind? That he told me?" Martha shrugged non-committally. "Come in." Sarah Jane led the way through to the sitting room and gestured for Martha to take a seat. "Back in a minute," she said, heading towards the kitchen.

Martha scrubbed at her face wearily. She had purposely not mentioned to Sarah Jane that it was her birthday today, not wanting a reminder of the birthday she hadn't celebrated in the year that had been rewound.

Sarah Jane came back carrying two pizza boxes and a bottle of wine. She put everything down on the coffee table, then fetched two glasses and a corkscrew. "Help yourself," she said, gesturing at the boxes as she dealt with the cork. Martha opened the top box and found a tuna and sweetcorn pizza, and garlic bread in the bottom box.

Sarah Jane poured two glasses of wine and set one down beside Martha, then sat down alongside the younger woman. "So tell me why someone who hasn't even reached her quarter century yet doesn't like birthdays?"

"It's not that I don't like them, as such," Martha answered. "It's just - " She broke off and sighed heavily, looking blindly at the slice of pizza she held. "There's something I still haven't told you, about my travels with the Doctor, and about our sometime Prime Minister Harold Saxon."

Sarah Jane looked up, gaping in surprise. "Harold Saxon?" she asked.

Martha nodded, then took a big gulp of wine, before beginning to explain about Harold Saxon being the Master, whom Sarah Jane had met in a previous incarnation. Martha didn't eat much, but she drank a lot of wine as she talked, explaining about her year-long trek around the world, telling the Doctor's story to everyone who wasn't in the Master's thrall.

"This time last year, I was in Siberia, trekking between the bases of two Resistance cells. I was freezing cold, desperately hungry and so exhausted that I still don't know how I kept going." Martha emptied her glass, then looked at the bottle and realised she'd drunk at least half of it in the past hour. "Shit! Sorry, I didn't mean to swear. I didn't mean to drink that much either." She rubbed at her eyes, trying to wipe away the stinging of her unshed tears.

"It's OK," Sarah Jane said softly. "It's OK." She put her arm around Martha's shoulders and pulled her into a hug. Martha's story explained an awful lot that Sarah Jane had been wondering about over the last few weeks. She suddenly realised the younger woman was crying and kissed the top of her head. "Come on, you'll feel better after a lie down," she told Martha.

She helped Martha up to her room, then got her over to the bed and sat her down. "Boots," she said, and Martha bent to pull one off, almost falling off the bed. Sarah Jane caught her and held her steady, and Martha clung to her for a moment, finding comfort in the older woman. Sarah Jane got her boots off, then encouraged Martha to lie down. She brushed a lock of hair away from Martha's eyes and bent down to kiss her forehead. She felt a surge of physical tenderness for Martha, who seemed incredibly young and somehow vulnerable at the moment. She leant forward again to kiss Martha's cheek, just as the younger woman turned her head to speak and their lips met instead.

Martha felt as if a jolt of electricity had shot through her and remembered the sensation of the Doctor kissing her on the Moon. She slid an arm around Sarah Jane's neck and kissed her purposefully, pressing soft, warm lips eagerly against Sarah Jane's mouth.

Sarah Jane had felt a similar sensation of electricity when her lips met Martha's and she wondered if it was physical or psychological. Then she stopped wondering and concentrated on the feeling of Martha's mouth on hers.

Eventually they broke apart, breathing heavily, their foreheads resting together. Sarah Jane straightened up and Martha looked up, opening her mouth to apologise, but Sarah Jane guessed her intent and placed a finger across her lips. "Shh." She pulled off her own boots, then lay down beside Martha. She ran a tentative hand up Martha's side, then cupped her breast and Martha arched into her touch.

"I've never done this before," she said nervously.

"If it helps, neither have I," answered Sarah Jane. She cupped Martha's cheek in one hand and kissed her again. The thought of Jack and his amusement at 21st century sexual hang-ups popped into Martha’s head causing her to smile as she surrendered to Sarah Jane’s kiss.

Sarah Jane pushed up the hem of Martha’s top to run her hand across her bare skin, causing a shiver of excitement to run through the younger woman. She stroked and caressed Martha's stomach and ribs for some time, then slid her hand up to cup Martha's breast a second time, and the younger woman gasped as Sarah Jane thumbed her nipple. She cupped Martha's other breast too, then lifted up her top to kiss both her breasts through her bra. They pulled apart again and Sarah Jane smiled tenderly at Martha. "OK?" she asked quietly.

Martha nodded. "Just surprised, that's all."

Sarah Jane laughed softly. "Well, it wasn't exactly on my to-do list today." She ran her thumb along Martha's cheekbone. "You're a lovely young woman, Martha. I can see why Jack's smitten with you."

"Jack? Smitten with me?" asked Martha surprised.

"Oh yes," Sarah Jane answered. "He raved about you for weeks before we met. I was half afraid to meet you because he made you sound like a paragon." Martha blushed and Sarah Jane hugged her; she didn't tell Martha how jealous she'd felt of her, listening to Jack rave about the wonderful Martha Jones. She'd actually refused to meet up with Martha for a while, despite Jack's conviction that the two former Companions would get on well together.

She certainly hadn't expected to end up kissing Martha, but if there was one thing that Jack had taught her, it was that labels weren't important. She smiled at Martha. "Tell me when to stop," she said, beginning to kiss her jaw, throat and neck. Martha gasped, tipping her head back to give Sarah Jane more room, and the older woman smiled. She moved her kisses lower and swirled her tongue around Martha's navel, then her hand moved lower too, sliding up under Martha's skirt until it found its way between her legs. She began stroking Martha firmly through her knickers and Martha moaned "Don't stop!" in a pleading tone. A few minutes later Martha's knickers landed on the floor, then Sarah Jane's touches became deeper and firmer until Martha came hard.

When she'd recovered, she looked at Sarah Jane hazily and found the older woman smiling at her. She watched as Sarah Jane undressed unselfconsciously, then found herself being undressed between hungry kisses. Martha realised that things had been rather one-sided so far and pulled herself up. "Lie on your back," she told Sarah Jane, who promptly rolled over. Martha began to kiss a path down her friend's body and Sarah Jane gasped as Martha's mouth found her right breast and her hand cupped the left. Then Martha's hands and mouth moved down Sarah Jane's body until she reached her entrance. Martha blew a warm breath over Sarah Jane's skin and the older woman gasped in shock. Soon Martha's tongue and fingers found the precise rhythm necessary to work Sarah Jane up to such a pitch of arousal that Sarah Jane thought she would scream with frustration if Martha didn't let her come soon. She wondered if Jack had taught Martha how to do that, being such an accomplished tease himself, and resolved to find out at some stage. The next moment she forgot what she'd intended to ask when Martha finally pushed her over the edge.

She was just recovering from her own orgasm when the very familiar sound of ancient engines began to wheeze in the back garden. Martha looked up from between Sarah Jane's legs and grinned up at her in a way she'd only ever seen Jack grin before. "Will he let himself in if you don't go and open the door?" Martha asked.

Sarah Jane nodded, wondering what was in the younger woman's mind. "He's been here a couple of times since that business with the school."

"Then let's give him a surprise," Martha said. She kissed Sarah Jane's thigh, then crawled up the bed to lie beside her. They both heard the Doctor's knock at the back door, then a few minutes later, the whine of the Sonic Screwdriver, before the back door opened.

"Sarah Jane?" called the Doctor.

"Tell him you're up here," Martha whispered softly in Sarah Jane's ear.

"Upstairs," called Sarah Jane. Then she found Martha's warm mouth on hers and felt the younger woman's fingers sliding into her moist depths again. They both heard footsteps on the landing, then the bedroom door opened just as Martha twisted her fingers so that Sarah Jane moaned aloud. They both glanced over at the door to see the Doctor standing there with a mixture of shock and arousal on his face. Martha also noticed a bulge in his too-tight trousers.

"Hello Doctor," Martha said, her voice low and sultry.

"Guh," answered the Doctor, with less than his usual eloquence.

The two women looked at each other, then moved as one, grabbing him and dragging him unresisting over to the bed. Within minutes they had him stretched out and naked, with the two of them lying either side of him, smirking. He still hadn't managed to utter a coherent word.

"So," Martha said, "We've got a naked Time Lord at our tender mercy. Whatever shall we do with him?"

"Actually, before we do anything with him, I'd quite like you to finish what you started before he arrived," said Sarah Jane hopefully.

Martha's smile grew even bigger. "Sounds good to me." She turned to the Doctor. "You can watch if you like, you never know, you might pick up some tips on how to make a woman happy."

"Oi! Do you mind?" the Doctor protested. "I'll have you know that I've learned far more than you'll ever know."

"Really?" asked Martha sceptically. "I never noticed." She crawled across the Doctor's legs towards her hostess, being careful to brush her hand against his hard cock as she moved, then she knelt between Sarah Jane’s legs once again.

She became so intent on pleasuring Sarah Jane that she was startled into a yelp when long, cool fingers began to stroke across her inner thighs. Martha looked over her shoulder at where the Doctor had moved to kneel behind her and he gave her a warm smile of a sort she'd never seen on his face before. "OK?" he asked.

"Yes."

He looked at Sarah Jane over Martha's head. "OK?"

"Very OK," she answered with a sigh as Martha continued to move her fingers in just the right way. Soon Sarah Jane's sighs were joined by Martha's as the Doctor worked his fingers inside the younger woman and began to stroke, twist and press in all the right places. The two women climaxed almost simultaneously, which excited the Doctor more than he'd imagined.

"Lie on top of Sarah Jane," he told Martha, who looked startled, then curious.

"Is that OK?" Martha asked Sarah Jane, who nodded, so Martha moved up her body until they were lying face to face. Sarah Jane immediately began kissing Martha, who kissed her back fervently as the Doctor slid his length into Martha's heat, pausing as her muscles tightened around him, then moving again as they relaxed their grip somewhat.

The Doctor began to drive into Martha, revelling in the sensation of his cool erection sliding through her tight, wet heat. Sarah Jane was kissing, licking and nibbling Martha's mouth and face, whilst one hand found its way between her legs to caress Martha.

Martha's body was awash with pleasurable sensations and she felt as if every one of her nerve endings had been set on fire. She cried out as she came, her muscles clamping tight around the Doctor's cock, which resumed its inexorable thrusts once her more intense spasms had passed. He took his right hand from her hip, reached around her until his finger touched the bundle of nerves at her apex. Sarah Jane pulled her hand away and he pressed and stroked, circling his finger around her until he knew his own orgasm was close. He pressed home his advantage and Martha came a second time, her orgasm triggering his so that he was soon pumping hard and fast into her depths.

He just managed not to collapse on top of Martha, feeling uncertain that Sarah Jane could take their combined weight. Instead he rolled down onto the bed and Martha felt him slide out of her. She lay on top of Sarah Jane, breathing heavily as she came down from her high and Sarah Jane nuzzled the side of her neck. "OK?" Sarah Jane asked.

"Yes," Martha answered, realising that the Doctor was stroking a gentle hand across her back. She lifted her head to look at him and he leant forward to kiss her softly.

"Happy birthday, Doctor Martha Jones."

"Thank you." She rolled off Sarah Jane and lay on her other side so that Sarah Jane was between her and the Doctor. He immediately began nuzzling Sarah Jane's neck and she sighed, then pulled away from him.

"Don't Doctor, please. That's not fair."

"What's not fair?" he asked, surprised.

"You doing that to me, getting me all worked up - " she broke off and closed her eyes.

"Don't you want me, Sarah Jane?"

"Yes I do, of course I so, I've always wanted you. But now you look so young and I'm past my prime. It's not fair."

"You're not past your prime," insisted the Doctor. "My Sarah Jane, you'll always be beautiful to me."

Martha felt a surge of jealousy at the Doctor's words and swallowed hard. She knew she shouldn't be jealous, because he'd known Sarah Jane more years than she'd been alive. Besides, the Doctor was right: Sarah Jane didn't look her age, but Martha knew that having Luke and his friends in her life had made her more conscious of the fact that she wasn't as young as she once was. Martha had previously tried to reassure Sarah Jane about that, but she now realised that the Doctor would do a far better job of convincing her than she ever could. She nuzzled the side of Sarah Jane's neck and whispered in her ear. "Sarah Jane, he wants you. He's hard for you. Take a look if you don't believe me."

Sarah Jane opened her eyes and looked at Martha, who nodded towards the Doctor. "Take a look," she repeated. Sarah Jane turned her head and saw that the Doctor looked very eager indeed. He and Martha both saw a spark of arousal in Sarah Jane's eyes and the Doctor immediately positioned himself between Sarah Jane's legs, his long fingers stroking softly over her body as he leant forward to kiss her deeply before sliding inside her.

Martha started to move away from them, intending to leave them together, but they both reached out a hand to stop her. "It's OK," she stammered. "I'll just go and have a shower whilst you - "

"Stay," Sarah Jane said, interrupting her.

"Don't go anywhere," the Doctor agreed, grasping her wrist.

Martha tried again. "No really, I don't mind - " She was desperate for them to let her go. They didn't need her jealousy to spoil things for them and she couldn't help feeling jealous even though the Doctor had made love to her first.

"Martha," the Doctor leant up on one arm, still inside Sarah Jane and slid his other arm around Martha's waist. "My Martha Jones." He spoke in the same warmly affectionate tone as when he'd said 'My Sarah Jane' just now. "Didn't you know that I've got two hearts? Quite enough to love two beautiful, brave and brilliant women like the two of you." Martha felt tears pricking at her eyes and she bit her lip. "Martha Jones, do you think I'd have made love to you if I didn't want you? Do you think I'd share this with you both if I didn't care for both of you?"

"No," Martha whispered.

"Then stay," he said, and she did.
