Snarry Games-- is it just me?

Aug 06, 2009 16:33

Is anyone else bummed with the Snarry Games this time around? Maybe it's just me, but with the way they're running it this time, the fics/art are sort of incomprehensible unless you know the prompt. I mean, it was a cool idea, but what does a fic based on Angels and Demons or Wuthering Heights do for me if I haven't read the book?

I can see where you're coming from, plus I'm sad that there are so many "character death" fics. :-(

I think the art is beautiful, but a little AU/OC, since I like Harry to be wearing glasses. It's not really Harry to me, unless he's wearing glasses.

You know, I thought I was seeing a lot of dead people!

The art is definitely great, and I really adore the last pic by cluegirl dealing with the Irish legend... but I don't know the legend, so it doesn't really mean anything to me. It's like a really cool illustration to a book I've never read. *sniff*

I've never thought about the glasses thing, but I think I agree with you. Dan Rad certainly doesn't look at all Potter-ish without his glasses (which isn't a compliment to him-- he should adopt them for everyday wear, IMO LOL), so I'm betting Harry would look really odd, too.

huh, that's interesting! After reading your post I agree the Games do seem to have a broader focus, maybe, than in prior years...I definitely see what you're saying about not being familiar with referenced books or myths...although one kinda neat thing is that it's like a Snarry way to learn about them. :D

And, for what it's worth...I also am shy of character death and must have Harry in glasses. ;)

I feel like I needed a reading list first LOL. I know the prompts were listed beforehand and everything, but I didn't think it would be so complicated!

There must be something to this "boys in glasses" sex appeal...

That's the limitation with cross-overs. Not that you can't enjoy the fic or art without knowing the original source material, but you really do miss some of the more subtle nuances that catapult a merely good entry into a work of genius. I think it's more noticeable, too, because in addition to crossovers, where you need to have knowledge of work outside of HP, there is also a historical/literary genre, which also requires outside knowledge.

It really *does* seem like the entries up to this point fit those parameters. But I imagine that once all the entries are posted, it will seem more balanced.

Yes, yes, yes, this is exactly what I mean! I'm so glad someone else knows what I'm thinking because I sure don't LOL!
