Miscellaneous updates:
I have submitted my dissertation to my committee and for the format check. The format check told me three things to fix, all of which seem to be related to the template they recently updated. As in, Friday. I'm actually glad I didn't notice; it's relatively minor stuff, but would have been frazzling to try to do on Friday

As for why people don't know about the 10 year thing, Davy Jones could have had a campaign of misdirection going on--he didn't want people to know he'd been stood up on top of everything else. ;P

I like the Elizabeth idea, but I'm not sure I can do it justice. It feels like it ought to be a long story of self-discovery, but I don't think I really want to write a novella on the subject. Hrm.

The only way Davy Jones was able to get people to join his crew was to make a deal with them so that they owed him a debt of service. This had nothing to do with him breaking away from his duties- he just got all tentacley and grossified for doing that. Only those who owed a debt to the captain were able to stay on as crew- the rest died.
The same theory loosely goes for Will as captain. Though he chose to carry on with the duty he's been forced into, the only reason his father was able to stay on the ship was that he still owed Will for freeing him- they said as much in the dialogue: "I still have a debt that's to be paid." So he stayed on the ship as part of the crew.
Elizabeth, on the other hand, didn't owe Will anything, and therefore had no right to bind herself to the ship.
... And that's my story.
