In the Russian Lit course I took freshman year the prof stated that everyone either loves Tolstoy and hates Dostoevsky or vice versa. And aside from me and one other boy that was very true. They come from very different philosophical positions and points of view. I did like Anna Karenina, but my heart belongs to Dostoevsky. He is one of my all-time favourite authors. He has a brilliant way of arguing forcefully for many different positions on issues and perspectives on characters - leaving the reader to judge for themselves. His main goal seems to be getting the reader to think deeply and compassionately. I must own, however, I have not read Crime & Punishment. Brothers Karamazov is probably my favourite novel, but, since it is about 900 pages long and difficult, most people choose not to start with it. I also loved the Idiot. In short, I highly recommend reading Dostoevsky's work.
