I finally finished Sharon Shinn's Dark Moon Defender, after reading about 1/4 of it and listening to the rest on audiobook. Some thoughts, in no particular order:
Comments, some spoilery. )

One thing I'll say is that there's at least a twist on this, since two Noble Gentleman/Rough and Tumble Gal pairings do exist by the end of the saga.

Hee, I just got to one of them and it's adorable.

Also about now (~40% through Reader and Realynx) Cammon is reminding me of our Surprisingly Studly Owen, what with the princess slowly falling for him and the queen so eloquently explaining what it is about him that's likely to appeal to a lonely young woman.

Most of what I remember about this book is how entertaining it was to me that you have three quarters of a book's worth of Justin and Ellynor gearing themselves up for this whole epic "you must fight my brothers! it will be terrible!" Romeo and Juliet plotline, and then Senneth pops up all "hey you melodramatic kids, I went and sorted it out with your families, IT'S COOL! Time for a big family party!" HILARIOUS ANTICLIMAX. I wish more Romeo and Juliet plots ended with the adults quietly sorting things out behind the melodramatic kids' backs.

Come now. You don't find Kirra's mad, drag queen voice to be appealing? Really!

(I'm actually more fine with the way bloke!narrator handles Senneth and Kirra's voices--they are, at least, expressive--than with how he turns Cammon into The Little Cockney Beggar Boy.)

And Lisa is right about the rough and tumble trope *cackles*

It just ate my comment! *shakes fist at LJ*

Um, I'm pretty sure I'll never stop giggling at the majority of Romantic Moments, and hearing them only makes it worse. I don't have a romantic bone in my body. *shrugs*

Anyway, the voices are growing on me, even Cammon's. I'm not sure if Kirra's and Senneth's voices have gotten better, or if I've just stopped noticing them enough that I can focus on the characters and the story.
