I have a spare Nintendo Wii floating around. Having already sold a couple (and of course keeping one for myself), I decided I should give it away in a contest.
Why?
Because I can. Because I know people want the Wii, I want to be entertained, and maybe garner a little publicity for this community in the process.
Right then. What sort of contest?
I like (video)
virals. I really haven't seen one that relates to LiveJournal, and that's rather a shame, because I'd like to see some. Additionally, it can be a cool way of marketing LiveJournal; I feel this is a fun and interesting way to show support for the LiveJournal service.
OK, I guess. What kind of videos?
Pretty much whatever you want. The videos need to be about LiveJournal, in some fashion, but other than that the type of video you wish to do is up to you -- it can be funny, serious, interesting, abstract, or whatever. You are spreading LiveJournal through your eyes.
What source clips can I use?
You can use any source video that is in the public domain or released under terms compatible with the Creative Commons Attribution - Non-commercial - Share Alike (by-nc-sa) 2.5 License. This means, do NOT use commercial copyrighted music. Original material of your creation is not an issue, but your videos will be released under Creative Commons as a condition of the contest.
What is Creative Commons, exactly? An what does "Attribution - Non-commercial - Share Alike?" mean?
Creative Commons licenses provide a flexible range of protections and freedoms for authors, artists, and educators. They are built upon the "all rights reserved" concept of traditional copyright to offer a voluntary "some rights reserved" approach. Creative Commons is a non-profit organization. By submitting a work as part of this contest, you agree to license that work to the rest of the world under the Creative Commons Attribution - Non-commercial - Share Alike 2.5 license . This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. Others can download and redistribute your work just like the by-nc-sa license, but they can also translate, make remixes, and produce new video based on your work. All new work based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also be non-commercial in nature.
I kind of skipped over that paragraph; my eyes began to glaze over.
Well, I suppose that happens. That wasn't particularly exciting to read; in short, it just allows for a few more freedoms than plain copyright, when it comes to sharing content. I'm not really an expert or anything.
...Anyway...you were saying?
Contest. Prizes. Virals. You can read more details below. I think this is actually a fairly cool idea for a contest.
It sounds intriguing. What can I do?
Read the below information. (The prizes, exciting, the rest...necessary, I guess.)
Enter the contest. (You can't win if you don't play!)
Spread the word to every LiveJournaler you know, and encourage them to do the same. (The more participants, the more interesting a contest; and I need a minimum of 15 entrants to get this thing going.)
Prizes:
1. First Place: Nintendo Wii (Sports Package), which includes one brand-new, unopened Nintendo Wii Video Game System, one Wii Remote, 1 Nunchuck, an AC Adaptor, AV Cable, Sensor Bar, Console Stand, and the Wii Sports Package (Includes Baseball, Bowling, Boxing, Golf, and Tennis) . Additionally, if the first-place winner so desires, I will ship (separately) them a
Retro Revolution Wii Skin by DecalGirl so they can skin their Wii to make it look like the original Nintendo console system.
2. Second Place: Four (4) $25 LiveJournal Gift Certificates.
3. Third Place: Three (3) $15 LiveJournal Gift Certificates.
Non-winning entries will be entered into a random drawing to award three contestants for one (1) $15 gift certificate each.

2. Video must be uploaded on a LiveJournal-supported video hosting service (

Use of images and works in the public domain may be incorporated into entries. However, materials which infringe on the rights of any third party may not be used. If I become aware of violations of this, your entry will be disqualified.
5. You are also responsible for securing any consents and releases required by law with respect to the use of any performances or images of people who appear in your video. Again, if you include material that violates a person's privacy or publicity rights, you entry will be automatically disqualified.
6. All entries must be licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution - Non-commercial - Share Alike (by-nc-sa) 2.5 License.
Voting:
Voting for entries is open to registered LiveJournal users. Winner(s) is(are) determined by the highest number of votes. Any attempts to influence the voting that violate LiveJournal's Terms of Service, your Internet Service Provider's terms of service, or your local laws will result in disqualification. No funny stuff, guys. In the event of a tie,

I will also inform the winners by leaving a comment in reply to their contest entry, their journal, e-mail listed on the userinfo page, or LJ Talk username, in that order. I will not use other IM services to attempt to contact winners. When notified, winners should respond in a timely manner to acknowledge they're aware they have won and can make arrangements for their prizes. If a winner doesn't respond to me in a timely manner, I will go on to to the person with the next winning amount of votes.
