Something was off there, something not right, but...

Ooh I hadn't even thought about Phil not knowing he was a cat or that he shouldn't be one, but now that I see it I don't know how else the story could've gone. Perfect!

A gray-and-black blur streaked in around the door and his ankles. It flew through the air and landed on the arm of the sofa, which it kneaded with eager paws.

Hee, I was totally thinking of Phil as grey/black in my head, too. And OMG the kneading, too cute!

It walked gingerly along the back of the sofa and dropped onto the seat next to Clint, flopped down and lolled its head against his thigh. Clint let his hand rest on the cat’s side and rubbed it absently, and it purred like an engine.

*cackles* Sucker. I bet he secretly wants a pet because he loves soft fluffy things.

Clint reached for the bottle, and Phil gave him a scolding mew.

I figured he'd be too overwhelmed by cat-ness to try to communicate, or even to think very clearly.

I looked at pages and pages of kittens via Teh Google and finally decided a sleek little tabby was the way to go.

When I was thinking of "unexpected things" for kitten!Phil to see Clint doing, JR's guitar was one of the first to come to mind, and it's an opportunity for endless kitten-mischief, and how cute could a serenade be? (I tried to find a clip of the version of 'One Man Guy' I was thinking of on YouTube, Rufus Wainwright's slower anthemic arrangement, but all I found was lo-res live clips where it's got three vocalists for no good reason I could discern.) So that was always going to be in there.

College, though. I see it as one of those things he's afraid to tell anybody he's doing, because he's shy about wanting it, and he wants to fail without an audience if when if he fails. Sort of like NaNoWriMo writ large.
