I accepted an offer from a progressive mortgage company to do their graphic design / marketing. The two partners have very different takes on what they need. One thinks they just need a graphic design grunt. The other and the one I would be working with primarily knows their desperate need for a marketing pro. My contract expires on July 16th and I am preparing myself for something similar to what you are describing. I can't say I am looking forward to a job search, since my experience with it and the job interviews is along the lines of what you outlined in your post.

Wonderful surprises are all in how they're presented. When they're presented as, "I'll let you know when you need to know" they're not a wonderful surprise. They're a way of distancing yourself from the person that's supposed to be your partner.
