Both of these books are by Canadian writers, both of them recently came out from Tor, both are sequels to books I love, and both have the same problem -- the original books (Spin and Sun of Suns) are wide open books that present and explore a universe, while the sequels are smaller scale books set in that universe ( Read more... )

Queen of Candesce felt very much to me like a movement in a well-defined larger story rather than just another story in that setting, for a number of reasons that would probably count as spoilers; I very much did not get the feeling that it was going to turn into an infinite series of stories in that setting, because to my mind the inherent limits of that setting are already pretty directly shaping how the stories can go.

Axis felt much more a story within rather than a story about, though the ending felt like it was wanting to be a story about and not quite coming together with enough substance.

There's definitely going to be a fourth book in Schroeder's series...I saw mention of it on the man's website.
