Just about every time I toured a church or cathedral in Europe years ago and saw beautifully carved pews, screens and other ecclesiastic detritus, I thought about how well such preserved structures sequestered carbon within the wood itself. The trouble, of course, is volume.

It's a great idea, wood is also a much more pleasing interior material than drywall or whatever. Recently I've been at two different companies where their office spaces were completely done in wood, which gives the offices a much friendlier, warmer feel.

It also makes me think of times when wood was the preferential building material for churches and other large buildings. Interestingly enough in my country there are 1440 wooden churches (mostly in north-western transylvania, the southern part has more stone churches).

As someone who's spleunked a flooded abandoned gold shaft or three, I can think of a few reasons why that idea might be, er, all wet.
