Dissent v. Dismissal: Principles of Disagreement

Nov 11, 2008 13:54

I've been fighting a rage of a rant for the last half a day. I'm sure most of you know the rage one gets when something really gets under one's craw, the spitting nails and fire feeling, the need to pound. The problem -- even though I felt this rage, I wasn't exactly sure what triggered it, let alone what kept it fiery. ( I think I've figured it out. )

language abuse! no biscuit!

Actually, neither am I. I'll have to consult Grey's Anatomy (Rustic Vernacular Edition).

The silent are not necessarily complicit, no matter how much the tired saw is repeated. Some of the silent -- indeed, probably most -- simply don't give a shit one way or the next.

And the folks who don't give a shit one way or the other aren't even necessarily apathetic. They might care passionately... about something else. There are many kinds of injustice, and several ways to take a stand against each variety, and practically speaking, a person can only ever have an informed and passionate opinion on a tiny fraction of the issues and causes on offer.

Also, the general sentiment expressed in the liberal slogans seems to have a lot of resonance with, "You're either with us or you're with the terrorists."

On every point, exactly.

Yes, I too am annoyed at the popular understanding of evolution as a progression "towards" some better state. It's equivalently annoying equivalent, historicism, states that history progresses and evolves towards something: "get with the times, man!"; "you're a dinosaur", and all that jazz. In the case of the latter, many people use it to denounce the Church's teachings all the while neglecting the task of actually showing why the Church's teachings are bogus.

Forgive me if I'm not very coherent here. All the drawing and being forced to think like a designer is seriously fucking up my skills in critical thought and logical form. "Fucking architects" -- now that's a good bumper sticker!

It's kind of an inside joke. What it needs is some common referential element.

Hmmm. . . . Maybe you could slip in a reference to erections.
