"Are my loyalties still in question?" Faramir asked, and though his tone was mild, a touch of the fierceness had returned. "Then you were inattentive during our first meeting, Master Gamgee. I served Gondor as a captain and a soldier against an enemy that sought to destroy all it touched. But I did not seek to be a destroyer myself, nor did I wish

That's a really good point and i think that it is important to consider that regarding what he was thinking when he finally decided to not touch the Ring even if it laid by the highway. It is because of his nature and his way of viewing the world that i think may affect him in not wanting to take the Ring. It is interesting to explore though. :)

Tolkien said in his Letters that the reason the holders of the three were able to pass on the temptation was because they had made their minds up beforehand. Only Galadriel was seriously tempted, and in the end she held to her resolve after all.
So Faramir had his word to help him.
Boromir made no oath when they left Rivendell, and he did not have a good understanding of what the Ring really was (which was NOT a weapon, but a trap). Also, he was exposed to its malice longer.
Could Faramir have held to his word if he'd been exposed to the Ring as long as his brother was? I think so, but who knows.

That is an interesting AU that i think fic authors have explored. What if Faramir had gone instead of Boromir? Then both would have probably lived through the war.
The elves were not tempted because they had their minds made up but Faramir just saw the Ring and even if he had dreamed about Isildur's doom, surely the Ring very near Mordor at that time spoke to him as well? What would the Ring have promised Faramir even from a distance? And what would make him say so adamantly "no"? I would think he would've also feared the effect since it had taken Boromir. THrough his shrewd thinking, i think he would conclude that trying to take it was the demise of his brother. It is interesting to further explore this though. :)
