For the religious element is absorbed into the story and ( Read more... )

I have never found much there in which to rest my heart

I like that phrase. LOTR is certainly the literature where I rest *my* heart. :)

I like the concept of "resting your heart" in literature! Leave it to Tolkien to think about it!

He became quite attached to his works and was quite adept in learning how to express what he feels, eh?
Tolkien writes so very well. Was rereading several letters last night and already know what's in store for next week. ;)

You know, it really confounds the critics who seem to think that there is inexplicably "no" religion in LotR, when in reality, it's steeped in it, in spite of not being at all overt.

I can imagine how frustrated JRRT would be with certain people who insist on turning hobbits into little pagans, for example...

I think that is another appealing aspect of LotR for me. I'm not that religious in any way yet i love LotR for its indiscreet ways of putting in religion. It's very unlike C.S Lewis' Narnia where Lewis is more explicit in writing about it in his work.

JRRT has reason to be infuriated if his hobbits are turned into pagans... :/
