Samsø Højskole, Day 1

May 17, 2010 22:21

Getting up early to a very different morning (not raining! Sunny!), we got the earliest breakfast we've had in a long time, and after the morning get-together set out on our bikes at 9:30. I was armed with my camera and 18-125 mm walk-around lens, set at f/8, 18mm and a fixed focus distance for quick snapping of any interesting houses we might ( Read more... )

When I look at your pictures I started to think about the meaning of the word "castle". Im not a native speaker so there may be cultural or other meanings of the word I`m not getting. In norwegian we have the word "festning" and "slott". The first one is most definetely in meaning of a military structure. Used as far back as 1600 to my knowledge, but the second word is ambigious because it can both mean military and not military as well. The best example of this is Oslo and Bergen where "Akershus festning" is not mentioned as a "slott" but "Bergenhus slott" is also "Bergenhus festning". However when we say "slottet" in Norway we mean the palace at the end of Karl Johan Street, which is by no means a military structure (if you disregard the military barracks for the Royal Guard detachment ( ... )

Well, since the cannon made it into general use, combining living areas and fortifications got less practical. "Slot" implies as much the main seat of local lords.

True. Several times I have come across expressions like "up at the castle" in english litterature and tv series, meaning the local landowner nobles. Most of these references are in connection to Ireland and Scotland, but some also for England. The only palace I can find in england is Buckingham though.

Its curious though dont you think. In English they went from Castle to palace, while in Norway we went the opposite way, from "slott" to "Festning".

Oh, Samsø! My family and I are going there in a few weeks. :) It's the first time I will go there, so I hope it will be a trip with great weather.
