Maybe the men see no reason to learn English. They might be trying to maintain their own culture, and want to preserve Japanese. Why do you think women want to learn English? Why is it important to be able to speak English in Japan anyway? Because English has become predominant??...... right after Mandarin and Spanish? We should all be learning Mandarin Chinese ASAP to be able to participate in the emerging new world and economy. Or, you could be teaching these charming young women Spanish.

you can learn another language and still preserve your own culture. my culture isnt endangered because i know spanish and some japanese. and considering that japanese is taught in public school starting in elementary school and has been for decades, someone in the government at least must think its important. and then you've got the zillions of english conversation schools. speaking english in japan isn't as important as saying...knowing spanish in america, but being bilingual can open up job opportunities for you. it only becomes important outside of japan. english is still the predominant business language as far as i know (and science language), which makes it at least more important to learn than spanish. i think it'd be a cold day in hell before the japanese embraced a chinese language education.
