I took mandatory French throughout school... was NEVER able to have more than the most basic conversation. (Je m'apelle). Today, quite a long time following High School graduation, I am still able to read french...or at least get the gist of it. I know how to pronounce most french words correctly that I read. Of course, my french conversational skills are non-existent. I think it's because (as you have indicated), we were all too embarrassed to speak French out loud, and we had no-one to speak French to outside of class. Immersion could be the answer... we now have some French immersion schools where EVERY class is taught in French.

yeah, i think thats how it should be. thats the only way i was able to learn spanish. i guess in my case it also helped that at the time all my friends were hispanic for some wacky reason. i wonder if immersion will ever become a part of the education system. seems to me like the only real way for people to learn a language properly.
