Sailors flowery unmentionables and unauthorised trousers

Mar 29, 2012 19:58

Anteros posted about Dudley Jarrett’s British Naval Dress recently in her journal and on LJ’s Perfect_Duet.

The book’s introductory paragraph speaks of unauthorized trousers as worn by Lord Cochrane and of umbrellas carried by officers in uniform *thinks of Stephen Maturin in the brown ‘thing’ with his green brolly*

Then the author tells us that ( Read more... )

According to this side

http://www.curioustaxonomy.net/etym/fiction.html

Ledermaniella maturiniana is a fantasy named plant. The explanation is fun!

As to the embroideries: Pullings must have an iris, most likely a yellow flag, spread above both buttocks.

It doesn't look as if the plant doesn't exist. It is a tiny African waterweed, but I do love the explanation. Thank you so much for that link.

I say, your choices are great. With Killick it has to be poison ivy! *sniggers*

Why a yellow flag for Tom. Is he lethal? ;D

Btw, I do not believe that Killick will be embroidering Jack's and/or Stephen's undies. Jack will do it himself. We know he can!

"Why a yellow flag for Tom. Is he lethal?" Yes, no, yes... ehem... In German it is 'Schwertlilie'... u know? The pic I found for him is Iris sibirica, the yellow flag is Iris pseudacorus and exists only in yellow, which is defenitely NOT Pullings colour. I. sibirica exists also in black... *licks lips* I see - I will be forced to make a drawing or manip, huh?

Yes! Poison ivy for Killick :) And no - Jack himself has no time for embroideries. He will use this as an excuse to keep Killick occupied while he is... occupied on another field... u know :) Making music with the doctor. *g*

Oh yes, the Wasserschwertlilie. I had not thought of that. I would appreciate a drawing or manip, and I am sure everybody else wil too. :D

Jack has been sewing for Stephen, he will personally like to put a tiny waterweed on Stephen's undies, after all, only he would know where the plants are most strategically placed. ;D

What a brilliant article, and a fascinating idea! My thoughts ramble as follows . . .

Stephen
If Stephen possesses more than one pair of drawers *giggle* then he should probably have the Shamrock on one and red Carnations on the other to represent his native countries . . .

Having Pomegranate as an official flower, the national flower of Spain is the Red carnation, which is not only beautiful and long lasting flower, but also sends send a message i.e. when you receive a Red Carnation Bouquet, it means, My heart aches for you and when you receive White Carnations, the sender is saying I am still available. However, if you go to Andalucia in Spain, you will see a lot of pots in the windowsills containing colorful bunches of Carnations.

Killick
Probably a yellow carnation which means you have disappointed me *chortle* according to the list at this website: http://www.meaningofflowers.co.uk/

Bonden
Eucalyptus for protection. All together now . . . awwww!

What great ideas. I had not thought of looking for the meaning of flowers, so thank you! :D

Stephen has three drawers at least. In one of the earlier books they ended up as loot for the French, and Stephen was very partial to the idea that they should be recovered.

I don't think Killick has to do all the embroidery. Jack will certainly do those for Stephen (and we know he can), and maybe the others have their tiemates too?

MInd, no flower for Jack? Or do you think he doesn't need one because he doesn't wear drawers?

Oh I didn't think I could improve on the opuntia aubrei!

However, from the list I guess we'd have to go for the Birds of Paradise for magnificence !!

Mmm, I'm sure they're all very skilful at doing things with underwear *wink*. And yes, come to think of it, Stephen is a dab hand with a needle . . .

Fields of buttercups had also sprung to mind! ;D

Oh, Birds of Paradise. There'd be space enough on Jack's drawers for plant as well as animal. It might even gratify Stephen to embroider one of Jack'S undies...and, as you say, what a lot of skillful things can be done with or in them ;D

Good for you! I'll have a look what you will come up with in regards to flower arrangements.

I had wondered whether the spoons would be fore or aft, and sidlj told me not to even think that. *g*

*nods* Either that or a blue cutter...or a brolly, like Mary Poppins, what with Bonden being the nanny of the world ;D

You mean on the underwear itself (yes, I have seen ducks and hearts and ponies) or on the waistband?

Yes, that is what I had imagined. :D They look good. Did your son work out what the flags meant.
