Came across this while updating the library and hadn't seen your comment before -

Yes, naturally Stephen discovered music therapy. That's what kept him and Jack surviving all those years!

It doesn't all quite pass, does it - he now has a 'good' eye (and a not-so-good eye, apparently).

Yes, I was getting into the territory of books I hadn't read before, and assumed his treatment was going to make him better. Well, I have a not-so-good eye myself (which needs surgery) so I feel Jack's pain.
