It was late and Stephen could not sleep.

He walked over to the stern galley to look out over the water.

Generally, tracing the phosphorescent wake had a lulling and somnifacient affect on him.

Tonight the sea was as flat as a metal plate and the ship motionless on its breast.

Jack said they would raise a wind and be back on the hunt before the hands were piped to dinner on the morrow.

He padded softly over to where Jack was sleeping.

Jack, his particular friend, his captain, his longed for lover, was asleep. Not in his usual dead to the world sleep. This was a troubled sleep, full of motions and mumblings.

Stephen watched him for several minutes. What enemy was he fighting? The Captain of the Acheron perhaps.

After a short while, Jack let out a loud sigh and settled into a quiet even sleep.

Stephen longed to reach out and brush the hair from about Jack’s brow. Or run his hand down the still firm belly to the enticing groin.

But he did not. He made his way back to his own cot, where with the help of his draught, he would battle his own enemies.
