SM is like a wounded animal, scared and hurt. I don't think he got into the shouting match with the Captain because he was angry, he just went on the defensive. Action, reaction. But I don't think he sees that in himself, and who am I to tell him? He's the naturalist, one would think that he would know! But perhaps he's too close to it. And now he's withdrawn from everyone. I don't think that means he's unapproachable, though. It will just take patience... and a good excuse to get close in the first place.
