OK, I have a friend who's new to the fandom, and I want to recommend a good slash fic to her, but I haven't read any A/M fan fic in so long, I can't think of any. She has only read through HMS Surprise so far, and she claims not to care about spoilers but I would still rather not rec her something with spoilers.

You could point her to astolat's fics at this link. Or to marginalia's here. There's not a lot being written right now, but these two are my personal favorite authors when it comes to slash. diane_c writes very good A-M fic, but it's not particularly slashy (IMO). You can find them in the memories of this community (link). The memories in general from this comm have a lot of fic.

Yeah, I suck. I'm really not into M&C fan fic right now, so I sort of forgot that my friend had asked for it. Will go tell her today.
