Oh, I'll gladly take the blame. It is a nice little piece of Jack and his thoughts and much in character with the dear captain. Now instead of whispers, it is grins and tipped hats my doctor receives, greetings and respect instead of dark mumblings, claps on the back and cheers if he has returned from one of his watery encounter What a nice sentiment, though I have my doubts about the claps on his back? I don't think any of the crew or officers would do it. *smiles*
I am very glad you liked it and thought it was in character. It's a great relief! lol
As for the claps on the back, I was convinced I'd read in one of the books something along those lines. Though it has been some time and I've read a lot of fiction since then, so no doubt I just made it up! lol
Very nice piece ^^ You captured Jack's voice very acurately. You seem to be a good hand at writting, and I would be very happy to read more of your future pieces :) By the way, How is it that someone can feel so much sadness and anger and bile, yet bring peace and happiness to those around him? was one of my fave sentences , I can't help but to question that myself too :P
I was trying to go for how Jack speaks, as opposed to to his thoughts and feelings stated directly, as if his inner monologue has run off with him. I don't know: am just glad you liked it! :D
Ah, poor old Stephen! I think that way too! Bless him. :D
As I say, I could not even hope to write in the way O'Brian does - I love the language but can never succeed in understanding how to write it! :D So I wrote in my own style and hoped for the best... I am very relieved it's still recognisably Jack!
How is it that someone can feel so much sadness and anger and bile, yet bring peace and happiness to those around him?
That just sums it all up, doesn't it? I adored this. *grins* Especially the morning routine. Stephen scowls darkly and it's then that Jack knows all is well.

I found this sentence particularly striking. <3
Lovely piece--you write Jack's narration quite differently from P'OB, and yet lose none of his character in the process. Congrats! ;D
