Not Right At All
"Stayin' up all night, strainin' his eyes like that," Killick muttered to himself as he bent to snuff the candle that had been left burning dangerously close to the captain's head. Wouldn't do to have those goldilocks singed, now would it?
"Ruddy phantom and its ruddy captain." The maps were picked up and carefully replaced on the table. "Not right to be chasin' it down so hard. Lackin' sleep and so tired he looks nowadays, which he's got eyes like a hunted dog. Not even scrapin' and screechin' along with the doctor of late, much though I don't miss that."
But he did miss it. He glanced at the violin case that hadn't been opened for almost a week. Sometimes when the captain and the doctor played, they almost hit on something nice; some cheery little melody that Killick could manage a short jig to, but more often than not it was some dirge. A dirge that he now missed more than he'd let on.
"Not right at all." He walked back to where Jack Aubrey slept, and looked down at him. Sighing, he settled the blanket a little higher around the captain, picked up his lantern, and tiptoed out.
