Jack Aubrey’s eyes opened. It was still dark, very dark, but something was amiss. He was quiet for a moment as he mentally took stock of his ship. The winds had not veered nor backed. They had not strengthen nor lessened. The ship had not altered course.
But still something was amiss.
He heard a small noise in the great cabin and heaved himself from his hammock.
He walked cautiously in to the next room, his great feet padding softly on the deck.
Stephen, clad in his night shirt, stood in front of the stern gallery window. The moonlight shining in on him made him appear even more skeletal. He cradled his injured hands awkwardly on his chest.

“Stephen,” Jack said softly

Stephen did not turn but replied “Jack, I cannot sleep. The darkness is far too bright and the silence is far too deafening.”

“Stephen,” Jack said again as he reached out to touch him.

Stephen did not flinch from the touch but turned and looked at Jack and said, “Oh.. brother, I am so tired.”

Jack reached out and gathered Stephen in his arms and gently moved him to the stern settee. Jack sat down and guided Stephen slowly down beside him.

Stephen looked at Jack and closed his eyes. He laid his head upon Jack’s broad chest and sighed. Jack’s arms wrapped around him.
They sat for many minutes. Stephen’s breath slowed to an even deep rhythm. Jack’s breath slowed in kind until they were both breathing as one.
Sometime later the ships bell rang out one bell in the middle watch.

Jack rubbed his cheek against Stephen’s bristly head and kissed him gently.
“Happy Christmas, my Stephen.”
