The Challenge - History Always Repeats Itself

Apr 30, 2011 20:33

esteven  suggested way back on day 10 of the meme, that a new challenge ought to be posted, and I should be the one to do it, being all new and shiny to this fandom. And, here we are!
It's 8 pm here on the 30th, the 30 day meme is just about over, and so without further ado:

A picture is worth a thousand words, though a lovingly crafted fanfic is certainly worth a picture!

The Challenge: A sketch or fan piece, any medium. I would love to see more pics for this fandom, but if you are inspired to drabble, or write a long piece instead of drawing, I think we're all good with that. Aren't we, lads?

Who: Any character from Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series, movie or book-verse

When: Oh, ought there be a time limit? To end the challenge?

Theme: History Always Repeats Itself, or, The Middies Can Tell the Time by the  Foreshadowing Falling from the Mainmast

The piece must be of a character/characters from the Aubreyad. It must be from a time before we ever met them in book/movie-verse, as younger versions of themselves.

MOST IMPORTANT: the piece has to be indicative of the character's personality as we know it. Take a favorite character/characters and draw them at some earlier point in their life, yet in some way still recognizable, i.e. young short yet enthusiastic Babbington kissing the girls and making them smile, to the astonishment of his jealous more handsome friends. Stephen dueling. Admiral Harte throwing rocks at windows and blaming someone else. Johnston with his teddy bear, except he's ripped the head off because his mother gave it to his little sister, "If I can't have it, NO ONE shall!!"

Likewise, it can be something that was described as the character having done in their earlier life, i.e. Jack as a middy, carving his initials (and maybe the shavings drifting on the Captain's head. ).

Or it can be something we have never even imagined before, but we can smile when we see it, and say, "Oh that is SO Stephen!" The sky is really the limit with their earlier lives, so enjoy!

That's it. Did I challenge it wrong? First time. Let me, and I can edit the post.
