The "that's definitely not a bear" noise was a tree. A very noisy tree. It seemed much less strange in the daylight.
And, presumably, the lights were backpackers setting up camp. Because when we left in the morning, there was a tent that hadn't been there the night before.
I'm still not sure why the lights kept vanishing. My bess guess is they had headlamps and kept looking deep in their packs or something.
Of course, we never saw them in the morning. So I can't verify if they were actually human. ;-)
