Billions and billions of bilious blue blistering barnacles

The Tintin books by Herge are things that, I suspect, a large number of western European children grow up with. I can't speak for the rest of the world, though God knows the works have been translated into almost as many languages as there are languages. Certainly I read those that were translated into Welsh, and all of the English-language ones ( Read more... )

I saw a wonderful poster, dating to the 1920s I'd guess, framed on the wall of a restaurant in south west France once. It consisted of a highly stylised representation of a negro gentlemen in the uniform of a French colonial officer, sitting happily on an upturned packing box at the edge of what looked like a jungle, grinning from ear to ear, and saying, in French, 'I like bananas!', whilst proudly waving said fruit aloft. I think of it every time I drive (fast, with the doors locked) through Brixton...

Do you compare all ethnic minorities to art deco caricatures? I like to think you have a wide experience of borderline-racist advertising, possibly recorded in some binder that you carry around in your glovebox everywhere you go. Otherwise it just gets too much.

PS. I laughed so hard at your Welsh in-joke that my sides split, my head fell off and I rattled the windows in their frames with my gales of uncontrollable mirth. No wonder you taffies are all such a jolly bunch of fellows...

Actually, that's probably true. Somewhere, deep in my heart of hearts, dwells a faint form of affection for you. Which I am, as we speak, trying viciously to quell by stabbing myself in the head with a pencil whilst heinously remembering what you can do with a wonton.

Oh yes, that wretched Nazi-collaborating, endangered-animal-hunting, racist Herge gets famous people in his films, but what about the vastly superior Asterix? Does he get any love from people like Simon Pegg? No he does not.

It's an absolute disgrace. I shall write to complain. I don't know who to complain to, so I suppose I'll send my letter to Gordon Brown. He must know who to pass it to.

What do you mean, you don't count Gerard Depardieux?
