Hipster vs. Artist: fucking stop already, please

Jan 27, 2012 20:22

Watched the HitRECord livestream at Sundance last night with all possible glee and fangirlishness. Woke up angry this morning, full of belated rage. Why? Because at every pop culture mass event I have ever been to, there's always a douche who tries to start up the Hipster debate. Only this time Joe, a guy I usually trust to cut other people's ( Read more... )

Basically, all of their conversations seem to indicate that they believe that they have a higher understanding about the world because they’ve seen a few Godard movies, and you should work to prove yourself to them.

This made me laugh SO HARD. So 'hipster' is about the attitude and not the interests? Makes a bit more sense...

I just read an article (not about hipsters, but still worth reading) yesterday that said this of hipsters: "the defining quality is that a hipster thinks and cares about what their tastes say about them, instead of just liking what they like." (emphasis original)

I think that's pretty dead-on as an explanation of why people find hipsters annoying. Especially when what it's saying is things like, "I think it's cool to look/act like I'm poor even though I'm so totes not," or "Everyone who likes anything mainstream/popular is a stupid sheep (even though these birds/owls/octopodes/mustaches/cupcakes/bicycles/etc I like are mainstream now, but I liked them before they were cool)."

"the defining quality is that a hipster thinks and cares about what their tastes say about them, instead of just liking what they like."

Oh God I used to be this person--I used to wobble between feeling superior and being embarrassed by my nerdy interests. But so many of the anti-hipsters also have the same attitude that they love to denigrate. 'I'm not a hipster, I hate hipsters SO MUCH. Let me prove my non-hipsterness by showing you my nautical tattoos, which I got wayyy before they became so popular.'

This 'acting poor' angle is pretty new to me. Do hipsters really do that? Because vinyl B-sides, etc are a little expensive, just sayin' XD

ok, 1) i love this deconstruction, even though i still feel like if anyone calls you (i mean that in the broader sense, not you personally) it tends to be an insult, and 2) you can rest easy on the "octopodes" thing because that word comes from multiple etymological roots i think, and "octopuses" is just as right as octopodes.

Yeah, I have never once heard the word used in a positive or even neutral context. In fact it's often emphasised with the F-qualifier. Our Joe even went so far as to call it the H-word.

Thank you about setting my mind at ease re. octopus plurals! Really, any of those words are fun to say.
